Description
Schäfer-Fröhlich Halenberg GG 2022 is a razor-sharp, deeply mineral dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most revered grand cru sites, Monzinger Halenberg. This is a wine for purists: precise, uncompromising and built on tension rather than opulence. The 2022 vintage benefited from cooler nights, preserving laser-like acidity and clarity in this Grosses Gewächs that has already earned 95 points from Anne Krebiehl MW (Vinous).
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Halenberg GG shows a pale, shimmering straw-yellow hue with green reflections that signal youth and energy. The nose is initially wrapped in a fine, yeasty veil of smoke, gradually opening to cool citrus—lemon zest, lime and grapefruit—layered with crushed stone, a hint of flint and a discreet herbal edge.
On the palate, the wine arrives with striking salinity and an immediate mouthwatering pull. This is knastør (bone dry), but far from austere: a calm, focused lemon core sets the tone, rising from a contemplative, stony depth. Everything feels in perfect proportion—nothing juts out—with the structure driving a long, piercing, and almost stern finish. The wine’s tension and mineral backbone give it excellent aging potential; expect it to unfold more aromatic complexity and textural nuance over 10–15 years, and quite possibly longer in a good cellar.
Production
The Monzinger Halenberg vineyard is one of the Nahe’s great steep sites, characterized by poor, stony blue slate and quartzite soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor, while cool nights preserve acidity and finesse. Schäfer-Fröhlich works meticulously in the vineyard, with selective hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy Riesling grapes make it into the Grosses Gewächs cuvée. In the cellar, the must is handled gently and fermented with great restraint, often with a natural, slow fermentation and extended lees contact to build texture and complexity, while preserving the clarity, salinity and tension that define Halenberg’s terroir.
Food & Serving
This is a superb food wine for refined, mineral-driven cuisine: think oysters and other raw or lightly poached shellfish, sashimi, ceviche, turbot or cod with beurre blanc, and delicately prepared scallops. It also shines alongside fine poultry, veal or pork with light citrus or herb sauces, and vegetable-focused dishes such as asparagus, fennel or artichokes when prepared simply. Serve cool but not ice-cold, ideally at 9–11 °C, to allow the aromas to unfold gradually. A short decant of 30–60 minutes in its youth can help the smoky, yeasty veil blow off and reveal the full aromatic detail.
Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the most acclaimed estates in the Nahe and a benchmark name in modern German Riesling. Based in Bockenau, the Fröhlich family has farmed vineyards for generations, but under the direction of Tim Fröhlich the estate has risen to the top tier of Germany’s VDP producers, with a particular focus on steep, stony grand cru sites such as Halenberg, Felseneck and Frühlingsplätzchen. Known for wines of exceptional precision, mineral intensity and aging capacity, Schäfer-Fröhlich has become a reference for dry Grosses Gewächs Rieslings that capture the Nahe’s unique combination of power, elegance and cool, stony finesse.
