Description

Schäfer-Fröhlich Felsenberg GG 2022 is a razor-sharp, intensely mineral dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most dramatic grand cru sites. Sourced from the stony, volcanic slopes of Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg, this wine captures the tension between ripe fruit, salinity and cool, smoky depth. As a Grosses Gewächs (GG), it represents the top tier of dry Riesling in Germany, crafted for both precision and longevity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Felsenberg GG shows a pale straw to light lemon colour with green reflections, hinting at its youthful energy. The nose opens with pure, crisp apple and citrus tones, layered with crushed citrus leaves, fern, and a delicate smoky nuance from the volcanic soils. Subtle herbal notes weave through the aromatics, giving the wine an almost wild, hillside character. On the palate, this is bone dry, linear and intensely saline from the very first sip. Bright lemon and grapefruit flavours drive the core, with sparks of lime and green apple. The citrus character gradually deepens toward grapefruit zest and pith, bringing a fine, spicy grip. Beneath the fruit lies a firm backbone of stony minerality and pronounced saltiness, giving the wine both structure and length. Young, taut and focused now, it has excellent aging potential: over 8–15 years it should gain more layers of texture, smoke and complexity while maintaining its vibrant acidity.

Production
The Felsenberg vineyard in the Nahe is a steep, rocky site of volcanic origin, overlooking the river and benefiting from reflected light and warmth, yet challenged by morning mist and high humidity. These conditions demand meticulous vineyard work, as botrytis must be carefully avoided in the grapes destined for dry Grosses Gewächs. The Riesling is harvested by hand from various parcels at different elevations, allowing precise selection and optimal ripeness across the site. In the cellar, fermentation is guided to preserve clarity and purity—any early fermentation notes quickly give way to the wine’s clean, crystalline profile. The result is a tightly focused, mineral-driven Riesling that translates the Felsenberg’s stony, volcanic terroir with remarkable precision.

Food & Serving
This Felsenberg GG is superb with refined seafood and lighter dishes that can showcase its salinity and citrus edge: think oysters, scallop ceviche, sashimi, grilled prawns or simply prepared white fish with herbs and lemon. It also pairs beautifully with goat cheese, fresh cheeses, and vegetable-driven cuisine like asparagus, fennel, or citrus-accented salads. Serve cool but not icy, around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to let the aromatics unfold. A brief decant of 30–60 minutes for young bottles can help the wine open up, especially if serving alongside more complex dishes.

Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the leading estates of the Nahe, known for ultra-precise, intensely mineral Rieslings that are among Germany’s most sought-after. Under the guidance of Tim Fröhlich, the estate has become a benchmark for Grosses Gewächs wines from steep, rocky sites like Felsenberg and other famed crus. The combination of meticulous vineyard work, low yields and sensitive, terroir-focused winemaking has brought Schäfer-Fröhlich significant acclaim from international critics and Riesling enthusiasts alike, cementing its status as a cornerstone producer in the Nahe and in the wider world of fine German wine.
