Description
Scarpa Barbaresco Tettineive 2021 is a finely etched expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barbaresco’s most respected historic houses. Sourced from the Tettineive cru, this wine captures the precision, perfume, and structure that have made Barbaresco a benchmark for elegant, ageworthy reds. The 2021 vintage delivers purity and lift, offering serious complexity while remaining accessible in its youth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Scarpa Barbaresco Tettineive 2021 shows a classic, luminous garnet core with orangish, brick-toned highlights toward the rim, typical of well-made Nebbiolo. The nose is refined and layered: notes of dried rose petals, violet, sour cherry, and wild strawberry unfold with hints of blood orange zest, sweet tobacco, anise, and understated oak spice. With air, more tertiary nuances emerge—dried herbs, tea leaves, and a subtle earthy, truffle-like undertone.
On the palate, this Barbaresco is poised and finely structured, with a medium to full body and the chiselled tannins that define great Nebbiolo. Red cherry, raspberry, and cranberry fruit are supported by savory accents of leather, tar, and licorice, along with a mineral edge that keeps everything focused and fresh. The acidity is vibrant yet well-integrated, giving the wine both lift and length. While already enjoyable for its aromatic charm and balance, the Tettineive 2021 has clear aging potential: it should evolve gracefully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity, silkier tannins, and more pronounced tertiary notes.
Production
This Barbaresco hails from the Tettineive vineyard, a prized site in the Barbaresco area known for its calcareous clay and marl soils that give Nebbiolo its trademark perfume and taut structure. The continental climate of Piedmont—with warm days and cool nights—helps preserve acidity and aromatic finesse, particularly important in a classic vintage like 2021. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, Scarpa follows a traditionally minded approach: gentle crushing and a relatively long maceration to extract color, tannin, and aroma, followed by extended maturation in large neutral oak (often botti) to allow the wine to develop without overwhelming it with wood. This combination of site, careful farming, and time-honored vinification yields a Barbaresco that is both authentic and finely detailed.
Food & Serving
Scarpa Barbaresco Tettineive 2021 is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with veal or beef braises (such as brasato al Barolo/Barbaresco), roasted lamb, and game birds, as well as rich mushroom dishes, truffle-based pastas, tajarin with butter and sage, and aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. A decant of 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins and fully open the bouquet.
Producer
Casa Scarpa is one of Piedmont’s classic, old-guard producers, with roots reaching back to the 19th century and a long-standing home in Nizza Monferrato. Known for its unwaveringly traditional philosophy and meticulous vineyard work, Scarpa has played an important role in preserving the elegant, ageworthy style of Piedmontese wines, particularly Barolo and Barbaresco. The estate is respected for its restrained use of oak, long-lived reds, and commitment to authenticity over fashion. Scarpa’s bottlings from key crus like Tettineive have earned a loyal following among collectors and sommeliers, who prize their combination of finesse, structure, and the ability to age gracefully for decades.
