Description

Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis 2003 is a benchmark single-vineyard Barolo from one of the appellation’s most storied crus, Cannubi Boschis, in the heart of the Barolo commune. This is a powerful yet finely detailed expression of Nebbiolo, shaped by a warm, dry vintage and Luciano Sandrone’s meticulous winemaking. It marries the opulence of 2003 with the classic Cannubi signature of perfume, structure and mineral poise.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows an intense garnet hue with brick-orange reflections at the rim, indicative of its bottle age. The nose is layered and complex, unfolding aromas of ripe dark cherries and macerated strawberries alongside dried roses, violet, balsamic tones, tobacco leaf, truffle and leather, with hints of cocoa, licorice and sweet spice emerging with air. On the palate, this Barolo is full-bodied and concentrated, reflecting the warmth of the 2003 vintage, yet it maintains balance and definition. The core offers generous, ripe red and black fruit, wrapped in silky, thoroughly evolved tannins. Notes of dried cherry, plum, rose petal, tar, forest floor and savory spice lead into a long, persistent finish with a distinct mineral edge from Cannubi Boschis’ calcareous marl soils. Acidity is slightly softer than in cooler years, giving the wine a round, accessible texture while still retaining enough freshness for lift. At this stage, it is drinking beautifully, with tertiary notes in full bloom and the structure to continue evolving for several more years in a proper cellar.

Production
Cannubi Boschis is a famed south-east facing slope in Barolo, characterized by calcareous marl with significant sand and clay, a combination that yields wines of aromatic finesse, depth and refined tannin. In 2003, a hot and dry year, Sandrone applied careful green harvesting and yield control to ensure optimal ripeness without overripeness, and timed the harvest precisely to preserve freshness and balance in the Nebbiolo grapes. After a traditional, extended maceration to extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity, the wine was aged for around 24 months in predominantly new French oak barriques, followed by several years of bottle aging before release, allowing the powerful structure of the vintage to integrate and soften.

Food & Serving
This is a contemplative Barolo that shines with rich, savory dishes. Pair it with braised beef short ribs, ossobuco, slow-cooked lamb shanks, game birds, or classic Piemontese fare such as brasato al Barolo and tajarin with truffle or porcini. Mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, aged Fontina or Pecorino also make excellent companions. Serve at 16–18 °C, ideally in large Burgundy or Barolo stems, and decant 2–3 hours before serving to fully open the bouquet and soften the remaining tannic grip.

Producer
Luciano Sandrone is one of Barolo’s most respected modern classics, having founded his estate in the late 1970s after years working in local cellars. From his cantina on the outskirts of Barolo, he helped redefine the region’s quality ambitions by combining precise vineyard work, low yields and meticulous cellar practices with a sensitive, terroir-driven approach. Cannubi Boschis became one of Sandrone’s flagship bottlings and played a key role in cementing the winery’s international reputation for richly textured yet finely balanced Barolo. Today, the Sandrone name is synonymous with purity of fruit, elegance and longevity, and their wines are considered reference points for collectors and Nebbiolo enthusiasts worldwide.
