Description
San Polo Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is a refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Tuscany’s most celebrated hillsides. Crafted under the stewardship of the Allegrini family, it combines classic Brunello structure with an elegant, contemporary polish. Thanks to its pedigree terroir and careful élevage, this is a wine built not only for immediate pleasure, but for many years of graceful development in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 shows a deep ruby hue with garnet reflections beginning to emerge at the rim. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with ripe red cherries, wild berries and dried rose petals, followed by hints of blood orange, Tuscan herbs, subtle spice, tobacco leaf and a touch of cedar.
On the palate, it is full-bodied yet finely etched, with a vibrant core of Sangiovese fruit framed by polished, persistent tannins. Flavors of sour cherry, plum and red currant are woven with notes of leather, licorice, balsamic nuances and savory earth, carried by a bright, mouthwatering acidity that keeps the wine fresh and precise. The finish is long, focused and mineral, recalling crushed stone and spice. While already approachable with a proper decant, the 2019 has significant aging potential; it should evolve beautifully over the next 10–15 years or more, gaining complexity and tertiary notes with time in bottle.
Production
San Polo’s Brunello is born on the picturesque slopes of Montalcino, where elevated vineyards benefit from excellent sun exposure, cooling breezes and limestone-rich soils that are particularly well suited to Sangiovese. The high calcium content in the subsoil contributes to the wine’s notable structure, precision and aging capacity. Grapes are carefully selected at harvest, typically picked by hand to ensure only perfectly mature clusters reach the cellar. After gentle crushing and fermentation in temperature-controlled vessels, the wine undergoes a long maceration to extract color, aroma and fine tannins. It is then aged for several years in oak and further refined in bottle, following the strict Brunello di Montalcino regulations, before release.
Food & Serving
San Polo Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is a natural match for richly flavored dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, game birds, and hearty stews. It also pairs beautifully with aged pecorino, truffle dishes and earthy mushroom preparations. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the aromas to fully open. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s full aromatic complexity.
