Description

San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo 2021 is a monumental expression of pure Sangiovese, crafted by one of Tuscany’s most revered estates. This is the follow-up to the outstanding 2020 vintage, and in 2021 it shows a touch more tension and structure, without losing its hallmark purity and elegance. Often considered one of the great Sangiovese wines of Italy, Percarlo stands out for its depth, balance, and its ability to tell the story of Chianti Classico through a single-varietal, vineyard-focused wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Percarlo 2021 is deep ruby with youthful, bright reflections hinting at its energy and longevity. The nose opens with layered aromas of dark cherries and kirsch, blood orange, pomegranate, and wild red berries, intertwined with notes of violets, Mediterranean herbs, subtle spices, and a fine mineral edge. There’s both richness and lift in the bouquet, with each swirl revealing more nuance. On the palate, the wine is intense yet poised, with a core of pure Sangiovese fruit framed by firm, refined tannins. Flavors of sour cherry, red plum, and pomegranate are supported by hints of blood orange zest, tobacco leaf, dried flowers, and a stony, almost saline backbone. The 2021 vintage feels slightly tighter and more vertical than 2020, giving it a racy line of acidity and an exceptionally polished, elongated finish. This is a wine built to age: while already compelling, it will benefit from at least 5–7 years in the cellar and can comfortably develop over 15–20 years or more, gaining complexity, tertiary notes, and additional textural harmony.

Production
Percarlo is sourced from organically farmed Sangiovese vineyards around the historic San Giusto a Rentennano estate in Gaiole in Chianti, in the southern part of the Chianti Classico zone. The vineyards sit on well-drained, stony soils rich in limestone and marl, with elevations that promote excellent diurnal variation, helping to preserve acidity and aromatic complexity. Yields are kept deliberately low to concentrate flavor and structure. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and rigorously sorted to ensure only the best fruit makes it into the final wine. Vinification typically involves a long maceration on the skins in temperature-controlled tanks to extract color, tannin, and aromatics in a measured way, followed by aging in oak (often large casks and barriques) for around 18–22 months. This patient, traditional-leaning approach allows Sangiovese’s character and the estate’s unique terroir to shine with clarity and depth.

Food & Serving
Percarlo 2021 is a superb partner for refined, flavorful dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, wild boar ragù, and truffle-inflected pasta or risotto. It also pairs beautifully with aged Tuscan pecorino, roasted game birds, and dishes featuring earthy mushrooms or rosemary and sage. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the aromatics to unfold. Decanting is recommended—about 1–2 hours for a young bottle—to soften the tannins, open the bouquet, and fully reveal the wine’s complexity.

Producer
San Giusto a Rentennano is a historic estate in Gaiole in Chianti, with roots dating back to a medieval fortification and Cistercian monastery. Since being acquired by the Martini di Cigala family in the 20th century, it has become one of Tuscany’s benchmark producers, known for its meticulous organic viticulture and characterful, terroir-driven wines. Within the Chianti Classico region, San Giusto is highly regarded for its ability to craft Sangiovese of great depth and authenticity, and Percarlo is its flagship 100% Sangiovese, often ranked among the finest expressions of the grape in Italy. The estate has garnered critical acclaim across multiple vintages for its consistency, age-worthiness, and unwavering commitment to quality.
