Description
San Felice Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Poggio Rosso 2019 is a refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Chianti Classico’s most respected crus. Crafted only in the best vintages, it offers depth, elegance, and a distinctly Tuscan character. This Gran Selezione stands out for its precision, its careful clonal selection, and its long, gentle maturation in large oak, resulting in a wine of both power and finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Poggio Rosso 2019 shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with garnet highlights at the rim, hinting at both concentration and complexity. The nose opens with pure red and black cherry, wild strawberry, and ripe plum, layered with notes of dried violets, tobacco leaf, cedar, and a subtle balsamic lift. Underneath, you’ll find hints of leather, spice box, and a touch of earth that speak clearly of Chianti Classico’s historic terroir.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, with juicy red cherry and dark berry fruit framed by fine, chalky tannins. Classic Sangiovese acidity brings energy and length, while Colorino (and a touch of Pugnitello) adds color, grip, and savory depth. Flavors of sour cherry, blood orange zest, dried herbs, and sweet spice carry through to a long, persistent finish. Structured and ageworthy, the 2019 has the backbone to evolve beautifully for 10–15 years or more, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes with time in the cellar.
Production
Poggio Rosso is sourced from a meticulously selected vineyard in the heart of Chianti Classico, where well-drained, stony soils and a classic Tuscan climate of warm days and cool nights allow Sangiovese and Colorino to ripen slowly and evenly. In the late 1970s, San Felice planted specially chosen Sangiovese and Colorino clones on this site, later enhancing the blend from the 2004 harvest onward with a small share of the ancient Tuscan variety Pugnitello. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve aromatic purity and natural acidity, then carefully sorted before fermentation. The wine is aged predominantly in 500-liter tonneaux for around 20 months, a format that offers nuanced oak influence without overwhelming the fruit, followed by a further 15 months of bottle aging to harmonize structure and complexity before release.
Food & Serving
This Gran Selezione is a natural partner for classic Tuscan cuisine: think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, wild boar ragù, and rich pasta dishes with tomato, herbs, and aged pecorino. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, roasted root vegetables, and mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and textural finesse. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the tannins to soften and the layered bouquet to fully unfold.
