Description
San Felice Chardonnay In Avane 2023 is a refined Tuscan white that captures the elegance of Chardonnay through a distinctly Italian lens. Named after “Avenal,” the ancient Etruscan name for the area, it carries a subtle nod to the rich history and culture embedded in the San Felice estate. In Avane is crafted as the purest and best expression of San Felice’s Chardonnay, balancing freshness, finesse and complexity in a contemporary style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, San Felice Chardonnay In Avane 2023 shows a bright straw-yellow hue with greenish reflections, signaling its youth and vibrancy. The nose is inviting and layered: ripe citrus, green apple and pear are interwoven with hints of white flowers, a touch of peach, and gentle notes of almond and pastry from careful élevage.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied yet poised, with a lively acidity that keeps the fruit fresh and energised. Flavours of lemon zest, crisp apple and stone fruit unfold into more subtle nuances of hazelnut and a faint mineral saltiness, reflecting its Tuscan origins. The texture is smooth and well-structured, leading to a clean, persistent finish. Enjoyable now for its bright fruit and precision, this vintage can evolve gracefully over the next 3–5 years, gaining additional creaminess and complexity.
Production
The Chardonnay for In Avane is grown in the rolling Tuscan hills surrounding the San Felice estate, on soils that blend marl, limestone and clay—terroirs that lend both minerality and depth to the wine. The vineyards benefit from warm, sun-drenched days tempered by cooler nights and gentle breezes, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly while preserving acidity and aromatic intensity. Harvest is typically done by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful selection of bunches to ensure only the healthiest, most flavourful fruit is used. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented at controlled temperatures to retain aromatic freshness; depending on the vintage style, a portion may be aged on fine lees, with or without partial barrel maturation, to build texture, complexity and a subtle, well-integrated richness without overpowering the natural fruit character.
Food & Serving
San Felice Chardonnay In Avane 2023 is a versatile partner at the table, ideal with seafood dishes such as grilled prawns, seared scallops, baked cod or seafood risotto, as well as lemon-roasted chicken, veal in light cream sauces, and fresh pasta with seasonal vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with soft cheeses, mild goat cheese and delicate antipasti. Serve well-chilled but not icy, at around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the aromas and texture to fully express themselves. A brief aeration in the glass is usually sufficient, but for more complexity you can lightly decant it for 15–20 minutes before serving.
