Description
San Felice Brunello di Montalcino Campogiovanni 2020 is a refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most respected estates. Sourced from the renowned Campogiovanni vineyard on the southwestern slopes of the appellation, this Brunello combines ripe Tuscan fruit with structure, depth and finesse. It offers both early charm and the promise of graceful evolution in the cellar, making it a compelling choice for collectors and Brunello lovers alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Campogiovanni Brunello shows a deep, luminous ruby core with garnet highlights forming at the rim. The nose is generous and layered, with aromas of ripe red cherry, wild strawberry and plum interwoven with notes of dried herbs, violet, tobacco leaf, leather and a touch of sweet spice and cedar from barrel aging.
On the palate, it is full-bodied yet poised, with vibrant Sangiovese acidity keeping the ripe fruit precise and lifted. Flavors of juicy cherry, red currant and blood orange are framed by fine-grained tannins and hints of licorice, balsamic, earthy underbrush and warm spice. The finish is long and savory, with a mineral edge that speaks of its hillside origins. While already approachable with some air, this 2020 has the structure to age beautifully for 10–15 years or more, developing further complexity and tertiary notes over time.
Production
Campogiovanni is situated on the southwestern side of Montalcino, an area known for its warm exposures, well-drained galestro and clay-limestone soils, and steady maritime breezes that help the grapes ripen evenly while preserving freshness. The Brunello is crafted from 100% Sangiovese (local Sangiovese Grosso clones), typically harvested by hand with careful bunch selection in the vineyard. After an initial sorting, the grapes undergo a temperature-controlled fermentation and extended maceration to gently extract color, aroma and tannin. The wine is then aged for several years in large oak casks and barrels, followed by further bottle refinement, in accordance with Brunello di Montalcino regulations, to achieve its hallmark balance of power, elegance and typicity.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for rich Tuscan-inspired dishes and hearty, savory cuisine. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted or grilled lamb, braised beef, game birds, wild boar ragù, or mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and aged pecorino. It also works beautifully with mushroom-based dishes and truffle accents, which echo the wine’s earthy undertones. Serve at 18 °C (around 64–66 °F) in large red wine glasses. Decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to allow the aromatics to open and the tannins to soften; older bottles will need a gentler, shorter decant just to remove sediment.
Producer
San Felice is a historic Tuscan producer with deep roots in the Chianti Classico area and a long-standing commitment to quality, research and terroir-driven wines. The estate acquired the Campogiovanni property in Montalcino in the late 20th century, quickly establishing it as one of the zone’s most reliable and respected sources of Brunello. Through meticulous vineyard management and a thoughtful balance of tradition and modern technique, San Felice has earned a strong reputation in Tuscany and abroad, with Campogiovanni Brunello regularly garnering high critical praise and recognition as a benchmark for the southern, warmer side of the Montalcino appellation.
