Rupert & Rothschild, Classic 2021

Rupert & Rothschild Classic 2021 is a polished Stellenbosch red that blends Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot into a refined, Bordeaux-inspired style. Hand-harvested fruit, careful cellar work and 18 months in French oak give the wine its balance of structure, freshness and generous fruit expression. Built for both immediate enjoyment and short- to medium-term cellaring, it reflects the cool, concentrated 2021 season beautifully.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby-red colour with youthful brightness. The nose opens with red plum and cherry layered with spice, forest floor and a touch of toasted caramel. The palate is marked by fresh red fruit, supple tannins and a smooth, lingering finish. Thanks to its concentration and balance, it should age gracefully for at least 7 years, gaining more complexity and integration over time.

Production
The grapes were hand-harvested from late February through late March from Stellenbosch vineyards, where a drier-than-usual season was followed by a notably cooler ripening period. These conditions led to smaller berries with greater flavour intensity and fruit definition. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, after which the wine matured for 18 months in French oak barrels to build texture, depth and complexity.

Food & Serving
Ideal with smoked duck breast, beetroot purée, artichokes and cherry sauce, this wine also works well with roasted game birds and richly flavoured mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C for the best balance of fruit and structure. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, especially if enjoying it young.
