Description
Rocche dei Manzoni Langhe Chardonnay L'Angelica 2023 is a refined, Piedmontese expression of Chardonnay that bridges Burgundian elegance with Italian character. Crafted from carefully selected fruit in the Langhe hills, it delivers structure, purity and a distinctive mineral backbone. L’Angelica has become a reference point for premium Italian Chardonnay, showing how this noble grape can thrive in the cool, limestone-rich vineyards of Piedmont.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, L’Angelica 2023 is a bright, luminous straw yellow with subtle green reflections, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose opens with layered aromas of ripe pear, golden apple and white peach, followed by notes of citrus zest, acacia blossom and a delicate touch of vanilla and toasted hazelnut from judicious oak aging. A fine mineral streak and a whisper of wet stone add complexity and lift.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, silky and impeccably balanced, combining ripe fruit with vibrant acidity. Flavors of orchard fruits and Meyer lemon unfold into hints of brioche, almond and a gentle creaminess, framed by a clean, saline finish. The 2023 vintage is approachable now for its purity and energy, yet it has the concentration and structure to develop additional complexity over the next 5–7 years, gaining more nutty and honeyed nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Sourced from hillside vineyards in the Langhe, L’Angelica 2023 benefits from marl and limestone soils that naturally limit yields and enhance aromatic intensity and minerality. The area’s cool nights and warm days help Chardonnay ripen slowly, preserving acidity and finesse. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection in the vineyard, then gently pressed to extract only the finest juice. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled conditions, often partly in oak barrels to build texture and aromatic depth, followed by a period of maturation on the lees. This approach brings creaminess and complexity while maintaining the wine’s precision and freshness, resulting in a Chardonnay that is both expressive and finely sculpted.
Food & Serving
L’Angelica 2023 is a versatile partner at the table, particularly with refined seafood and white meat dishes. It pairs beautifully with seared scallops, grilled turbot, lobster with butter sauce, creamy seafood risotto, roasted chicken with herbs, or veal in delicate cream-based preparations; it also works well with mushroom dishes and medium-aged cheeses. Serve at 10–12 °C (50–54 °F) to highlight its aromatics and tension. A brief decanting of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a little before serving, helps the wine unfold its full range of fruit, floral and toasty notes.
Producer
Rocche dei Manzoni, founded in 1974 in Monforte d’Alba, is widely respected as one of the pioneers of modern, quality-focused winemaking in Piedmont. While best known for its Barolo and other classic Langhe reds, the estate was also among the early advocates for producing serious, terroir-driven white wines in the region, demonstrating that international varieties like Chardonnay can achieve outstanding results in these hills. Over the decades, Rocche dei Manzoni has earned a strong reputation for precision, innovation and consistency, with numerous accolades from leading Italian and international wine critics. L’Angelica reflects the estate’s commitment to crafting whites with depth, elegance and a clear sense of place in the heart of Piedmont.
