Description
Roc de Cambes 1998 is a standout Côtes de Bourg from François Mitjaville, offering the kind of depth and precision usually associated with far more prestigious Bordeaux bottlings. Crafted from old vines on a south-facing slope above the Gironde, it combines ripe fruit, mineral intensity, and beautifully integrated oak in a wine that helped put the estate on the map in the late 1980s.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a dark red color with remarkable depth. The bouquet is pure and elegant, unfolding with aromas of ripe black cherries, crème de cassis, violets, and a subtle noble wood character.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied without feeling heavy, with chalky tannins and a mineral framework wrapped around layers of dark berry fruit. The finish is long, spicy, and persistent, with enough structure to continue evolving gracefully for years; Robert Parker noted that older vintages have aged extremely well, suggesting impressive cellaring potential.
Production
The 10-hectare vineyard sits on a south-facing slope near the Gironde, benefiting from excellent exposure and a terroir that encourages ripeness and concentration. The vines average 40–50 years of age, and the cuvée is made from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec, harvested as late as possible to achieve optimal maturity and richness.
Vinification takes place in cement tanks, followed by aging in French oak barrels for 18–24 months, with about 50% new oak. This approach gives the wine both structure and polish while preserving the character of the fruit and the mineral edge of the site.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds, or slow-cooked dishes with herbs and root vegetables. It also works well with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for one to two hours if drinking now to allow the bouquet and texture to open fully.
Producer
Roc de Cambes was acquired by François Mitjaville in 1988, and from the earliest vintages he established it as one of the leading properties in Côtes de Bourg. Mitjaville is widely respected in Bordeaux for his meticulous vineyard work and his ability to craft wines with exceptional personality and age-worthiness. The estate has earned a reputation for producing wines of remarkable quality and value, often exceeding expectations for the appellation.
