Description
Robinot - L'Ange Vin L'As de les Années Folles Ancestrale is a characterful, naturally made Loire ‘hvidvin’ that dances somewhere between white and light rosé, with vibrant energy and fine sparkle. Crafted from Chenin Blanc and the rare local grape Pineau d'Aunis, it’s a joyful, slightly wild expression of the region’s old-vine heritage. Made in the ancestral (pét-nat) method, this cuvée captures the free-spirited feel of the “Roaring Twenties” its name evokes—festive, expressive and utterly alive in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, L'As de les Années Folles Ancestrale typically shows a hazy, pale gold to onion-skin hue, reflecting its minimal intervention and gentle handling, often crowned by a lively, fine-beaded mousse. The nose is intensely expressive and a little untamed: think crisp orchard fruits (pear, apple), quince and citrus zest wrapped in notes of wild strawberry, white flowers, crushed herbs, and a subtle spice from the Pineau d'Aunis. There is often a touch of bread dough or leesy complexity that adds depth.
On the palate, this wine is bright, electric and bone-refreshing, with Chenin’s taut acidity driving the rhythm. Juicy citrus, green apple, tart stone fruit and red-berry highlights mingle with a gentle peppery edge from the Pineau d'Aunis, giving a lightly grippy, savory twist on the finish. The texture is lightly creamy from the natural fizz, yet the overall impression is dry, tensile and gastronomic rather than overtly fruity. As a non-vintage ancestral cuvée, it’s made to be enjoyed young for maximum vibrancy and freshness, though a year or two in bottle can add a bit more harmony and complexity if you enjoy slightly evolved pét-nats.
Production
Sourced from organically and often biodynamically farmed parcels in the northern Loire, Robinot’s vineyards sit on classic tuffeau limestone and clay with silex, a terroir that gives Chenin Blanc its trademark tension and minerality while adding lift and spice to Pineau d'Aunis. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with rigorous selection in the vineyard to ensure only healthy fruit—crucial for low- or zero-sulfur natural winemaking. In the cellar, fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts and no additives, following the ancestral (pétillant naturel) method: the wine is bottled before fermentation finishes, allowing it to complete in bottle and create its gentle, natural sparkle. No dosage is added and sulfur, if used at all, is minimal, resulting in an unfiltered, living wine that can show a natural haze and evolving complexity.
Food & Serving
This vibrant, lightly sparkling Loire hvidvin is a superb match for a wide range of foods, especially those that appreciate high acidity and a touch of texture. Try it with oysters, mussels, ceviche, sashimi or simply grilled white fish, where its saline edge and freshness shine. It also pairs beautifully with goat’s cheese (a Loire classic), charcuterie, fried chicken, sushi, vegetable tempura, and lightly spiced Asian dishes. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C to highlight its precision and bubbles. A brief, gentle opening in the glass is usually enough; if the wine is particularly expressive or slightly reductive on first pour, a light splash into a carafe for 10–15 minutes can help it open, but avoid extended decanting to preserve the sparkle.
Producer
Robinot - L'Ange Vin is the cult Loire estate of Jean-Pierre Robinot, a pioneer and early champion of natural wine in France. After running a famed Paris wine bar and being instrumental in the early days of the natural wine movement, he returned to his native Loire to farm old-vine Chenin Blanc and Pineau d'Aunis on limestone-rich soils around the village of Chahaignes. Working with painstaking organic practices, very low yields, and uncompromising cellar standards—no commercial yeasts, minimal or no sulfur, long élevage—Robinot has earned a devoted following among sommeliers and enthusiasts worldwide. His wines, especially the L'Ange Vin and Opera du Vin bottlings, are now benchmarks for pure, soulful Loire natural wines, celebrated for their intensity, aging capacity and unmistakably alive character.
