Description
Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 2018 is one of Burgundy’s most coveted expressions of Pinot Noir, sourced from a premier cru vineyard that many consider on par with grand cru status. This wine is celebrated for its haunting perfume, silken texture, and remarkable depth, offering a quintessential taste of Chambolle’s famed elegance. In 2018, the warm, generous vintage added extra richness to the cuvée, while preserving the finesse that has made Les Amoureuses legendary among collectors.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Les Amoureuses shows a vibrant, translucent ruby color with shimmering garnet highlights at the rim. The nose is intensely aromatic and beautifully layered: think wild strawberries, crushed raspberries, and red cherries interwoven with rose petals, violets, blood orange zest, and subtle notes of Asian spice, wet stone, and the faintest hint of fine oak.
On the palate, this is silk and precision in equal measure. The attack is pure and red-fruited, with a core of ripe raspberry, strawberry, and pomegranate, supported by ultra-fine, chalky tannins and a mouthwatering, mineral-driven acidity. Hints of white pepper, tea leaf, and a refined, sweet spice from élevage emerge with air, adding complexity without overshadowing the fruit. The finish is long, lifted, and almost weightless, leaving a lingering impression of floral perfume and saline minerality. While already captivating in its youth, the structure and balance suggest excellent aging potential over 12–20 years, with tertiary notes of underbrush, truffle, and dried rose likely to unfold with time.
Production
Les Amoureuses is a cherished premier cru vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny, set on a slope of limestone-rich soils with a high proportion of fine, chalky stones and thin topsoil that naturally limits yields and concentrates flavor. The terroir’s combination of poor, well-drained soils and a relatively warm, sheltered exposure is key to the cuvée’s intensity and aromatic finesse. At Domaine Robert Groffier, the Pinot Noir is typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to retain only perfectly healthy bunches. Vinification favors a careful, gentle extraction—often with a portion of whole clusters, depending on the vintage—to preserve elegance and aromatic complexity. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (including a proportion of new oak) to add structure and polish without masking the vineyard character. The result is a wine that clearly translates the delicacy, tension, and perfume that make Les Amoureuses so prized.
Food & Serving
This wine shines with refined, delicately flavored dishes that respect its subtlety and perfume. Ideal pairings include roast pigeon, duck breast with cherries, veal tenderloin, or refined dishes featuring morels, truffles, or wild mushrooms. It can also be superb with simply prepared lamb, game birds, and aged but not overly powerful cheeses such as Comté or Tomme. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. For the 2018 vintage, decanting for 45–60 minutes in its youth is recommended to allow the bouquet to blossom; as the wine matures, a gentle pour into a wide glass may be sufficient.
