Description
Rivera’s Il Falcone Riserva Castel del Monte 2017 is the estate’s flagship red and one of the most celebrated wines from northern Puglia. Built around Nero di Troia with a touch of Montepulciano, it combines regional character with impressive structure, elegance, and depth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, intense ruby color. The nose offers ripe red fruit layered with notes of leather, cedar, and warm spice, giving it a refined and complex profile.
The palate is structured and focused, with firm tannins, excellent balance, and a long, persistent finish. It has the backbone to develop gracefully with time, and the 2017 vintage should continue to age well over the coming years, gaining more nuance and softness.
Production
The grapes come from Castel del Monte in the northern part of Apulia, an area shaped by cooling hillsides and the influence of the Adriatic Sea. Rivera works with local varieties suited to the region’s terroir, and for Il Falcone Riserva the fruit is primarily Nero di Troia, complemented by Montepulciano. The wine is aged for 14 months in oak followed by 12 months in bottle before release.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roasted lamb, grilled beef, game, braised meats, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for at least an hour is recommended to let the wine open fully and show its best balance and aromatic complexity.

Rivera is considered one of the top producers in Apulia and has long been led by the de Corato family. Based in the DOCG Castel del Monte, the estate has helped define the modern reputation of the region through elegant, finely tuned wines with real structure and drinkability. Il Falcone Riserva stands as its most iconic bottling and a benchmark for the area.
