Description

Réne Barbier Clos Mogador 2021 is a benchmark red from Priorat, a region famed for powerful yet increasingly refined Mediterranean wines. This vintage leans into freshness and elegance, reflecting a deliberate shift in both vineyard and cellar to highlight the character of old vines and the region’s dramatic slate soils. It’s a collector-worthy bottle that still remains accessible to drinkers who want to experience a modern, more nuanced expression of classic Priorat.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Clos Mogador 2021 shows a deep, vibrant garnet core with a lively rim, hinting at both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is layered and expressive, combining ripe black cherries, plum and wild berries with notes of warm wet slate, graphite, dried Mediterranean herbs (rosemary, thyme), liquorice and a subtle floral lift. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet strikingly poised, with a beautiful interplay between density and freshness. Ripe dark fruit is framed by savory mineral notes, hints of cocoa, black olive and aromatic garrigue. The 30% whole-cluster fermentation adds a fine, spicy complexity and a touch of crunch to the tannins, which feel notably more polished and elegant than in earlier vintages. Acidity is well-judged, giving the wine a long, precise, and mouthwatering finish. With its balance, depth and structure, this 2021 has excellent aging potential: it can be enjoyed now with a decant, but will reward 10–15 years of careful cellaring, steadily gaining in complexity and silkiness.

Production
Clos Mogador comes from steep, terraced vineyards in Priorat, Catalonia, rooted in classic llicorella – the region’s signature flaky, dark slate and quartz soils that give such distinctive minerality and tension. In recent years, the estate has removed south-facing Cabernet Sauvignon plots and increased the proportion of Cariñena to around 30%, bringing it closer to Garnacha in the final blend and enhancing freshness, energy and regional typicity. The 2021 fermented with about 30% whole clusters to add aromatic lift and vibrancy, followed by a long maceration of 40–50 days with very gentle extraction to preserve finesse rather than power. Maturation took place predominantly in 2,000-liter oak foudres, with a small portion in smaller barrels and then in concrete, minimizing overt oak influence while allowing the wine to harmonize and gain texture. Bottling occurred in June 2023, and total alcohol sits at a balanced 14%, emphasizing elegance over sheer weight.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile, gastronomic Priorat that shines alongside richly flavored Mediterranean and hearty dishes. Think slow-braised lamb shoulder with herbs, grilled ribeye, duck breast with cherry or fig, game birds, or robust stews featuring root vegetables and mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged Manchego, hard sheep’s milk cheeses, and dishes with roasted eggplant, peppers, and olives. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to emphasize freshness and aromatic complexity. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to let the wine open fully and soften the tannins; older bottles (from a few years of age onward) may need a shorter, gentler decant.

Producer
René Barbier is one of the visionary figures behind the rebirth of Priorat, and Clos Mogador is his flagship estate wine, recognized as one of the region’s true pioneers and icons. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Barbier and a small group of like-minded winemakers helped put Priorat back on the world wine map by focusing on low-yielding old vines, rugged slate terroir, and meticulous, quality-driven viticulture. Over the years, Clos Mogador has earned a reputation for powerful, ageworthy reds that capture the essence of the region, and more recently for refining that power into greater precision and elegance. The estate’s ongoing shift toward higher proportions of Garnacha and Cariñena, more sensitive extraction, and larger, more neutral vessels underscores its role as a leader in expressing a modern, terroir-driven style of Priorat.
