Description

Réne Barbier Clos Mogador 2019 in magnum format is a benchmark Priorat and one of Spain’s truly iconic red wines. This flagship cuvée marries power and depth with remarkable precision and poise, offering a profound expression of Catalonia’s dramatic slate hillsides. Bottled in 1.5 L, it’s built for long-term cellaring and unforgettable occasions. What sets the 2019 Clos Mogador apart is its combination of concentrated fruit, mineral intensity and impeccable balance, shaped by meticulous vineyard work and a move towards larger foudres rather than small barrels. Pioneered by René Barbier in the 1980s, Clos Mogador helped put Priorat back on the world wine map, and 2019 is widely regarded as one of the finest vintages the estate has ever produced.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Clos Mogador shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple core that clings to the sides of the glass, signaling both youth and density. The nose is layered and complex: ripe blackberries, dark cherries and plum compote are interwoven with notes of graphite, violet, wild Mediterranean herbs (thyme, rosemary, lavender) and warm slate, plus subtle hints of cocoa, licorice and sweet spice from its long élevage. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, structured Priorat with impressive concentration and energy. The fruit is dark and pure, supported by firm yet very fine-grained tannins and a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine lifted despite its power. Flavors of black cherry, blackcurrant and blueberry are wrapped in savory mineral tones, garrigue, tobacco leaf and a touch of dark chocolate, leading into a very long, layered finish. Even in magnum it is approachable with air, but it is still compact and tightly coiled, clearly designed to unfold over time. The aging potential is excellent: in this format, 2019 should comfortably evolve and gain complexity over 15–25 years, and likely longer under good cellaring conditions.

Production
Clos Mogador is sourced from steep, terraced vineyards in Priorat’s rugged hills of Catalonia, rooted in the region’s famous "llicorella" soils—a mix of dark slate and quartz that gives the wines their hallmark mineral edge. Old vines of mainly Garnacha and Cariñena, complemented by varieties such as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, are farmed with a strong commitment to regenerative agriculture under the guidance of Christian Barbier, focusing on soil health, biodiversity and minimal intervention. Harvesting is done by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are selected from these low-yielding vines. In the cellar, the grapes are typically fermented with gentle extraction to preserve finesse as well as power, and the wine is then aged in large foudres rather than small barriques—a transition the estate began in 2011 and completed by 2020—to emphasize purity, texture and terroir transparency over overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic wine that shines alongside rich, flavorful dishes. Think slow-braised lamb shank with herbs, beef short ribs, venison, Iberico pork, or deeply savory stews and casseroles. It also pairs beautifully with grilled ribeye, charred vegetables, mushroom-based dishes, and hard, aged cheeses like Manchego viejo or Comté. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to show both fruit and freshness; avoid serving too warm, as the alcohol and richness can dominate. Decanting is strongly recommended: for the 2019 in magnum, give it at least 2–3 hours in a large decanter if drinking now, and even older bottles will benefit from a gentle decant to open up the aromatics and soften the tannins.

Producer
René Barbier is one of the founding figures of modern Priorat, widely credited with reviving this historic but once-forgotten region in Catalonia. In the late 1980s, he and a small group of visionary winemakers recognized the extraordinary potential of Priorat’s old vines and slate soils, and Clos Mogador quickly emerged as one of the area’s most sought-after wines. Over the years, the estate has become a reference point for terroir-driven Spanish reds, known for their depth, longevity and distinctive mineral character. Today, with the next generation led by Christian Barbier deeply involved, the domaine continues to push quality forward through regenerative farming, careful vineyard selection and a thoughtful, less interventionist approach in the cellar, cementing its reputation as one of the great names of Catalan and Spanish wine.
