Description
Clos Mogador 2018 in magnum format (1.5 L) is the flagship red from René Barbier, one of Priorat’s most revered and pioneering estates. This vintage brings together power and finesse in a beautifully composed blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, crafted through slow fermentations and long aging. The generous magnum format enhances its aging potential, making it a superb choice for the cellar or for sharing at the table.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Clos Mogador 2018 shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, with excellent density that hints at its seriousness while still appearing bright and youthful. The nose is expressive yet refined, with layers of ripe red and black berries, plum, and wild cherry wrapped in notes of Mediterranean herbs, licorice, violets, and graphite, alongside subtle toasted spice and a touch of cocoa from its time in oak.
On the palate, this is a more elegant, nuanced expression of Clos Mogador, reflecting the cooler, wetter 2018 vintage. The wine is full-bodied but not heavy, with fine-grained tannins and a fresh, well-integrated acidity that keeps everything lifted. Flavors of dark cherry, blackberry, and mulberry unfold into hints of garrigue, black olive, smoke, and sweet spice, finishing long and layered. While already approachable with air, the structure and balance suggest excellent aging potential, especially in magnum, where it should evolve gracefully over 10–20 years, gaining even more complexity and silkiness.
Production
Clos Mogador comes from steep, terraced vineyards in Priorat, Catalonia, rooted in the region’s famed llicorella soils—a mix of slate and quartz that naturally limits yields and imparts intensity, minerality and depth. The 2018 is a blend of 45% Garnacha, 29% Cariñena, 16% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested by hand from old vines that benefit from Mediterranean sunshine tempered by cooling breezes. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, in line with the estate’s philosophy of slow fermentations, long macerations and minimal intervention to fully express the terroir. The wine is then aged for 18 months, primarily in large 2,000-liter oak vats with about 30% in 300-liter barrels, a regimen that polishes the tannins and adds complexity without overwhelming the fruit, before bottling in July 2020.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic red that shines alongside richly flavored dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank, beef short ribs, roast venison, Iberico pork, or hearty stews with root vegetables and wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses, grilled vegetables, and dishes seasoned with herbs like rosemary, thyme, and bay. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. Decanting is strongly recommended—give it at least 1–2 hours in a decanter, and even more for full expression, especially in its youth and in this magnum format.
Producer
René Barbier is a central figure in the modern history of Priorat, widely credited as one of the key pioneers who helped revive the region in the late 20th century and elevate it to world-class status. From his Clos Mogador estate, Barbier championed low yields, old vines, and a deep respect for the rugged llicorella terroir, producing wines that are both powerful and refined. The estate’s flagship Clos Mogador was among the original “Clos” wines that put Priorat on the global fine wine map and has since become one of Spain’s most sought-after reds. Consistently acclaimed by international critics, Clos Mogador stands as a benchmark for the region, combining tradition, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to quality.
