Description

Renato Keber Collio Friulano Zegla Riserva 2016 is a quintessential expression of Friulano and one of the purest voices of Collio’s famed hills. Sourced from the Zegla area, a historic cru of the region, it showcases the noble, mineral-driven character that has made Friuli’s white wines so sought after. This Riserva is crafted to highlight the “ponka” soil – the local marl and sandstone – giving a wine that reveals itself slowly in the glass and rewards attentive, experienced tasters.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Zegla Riserva presents a deep straw to light golden hue, hinting at both maturity and concentration. The nose is refined and evolving, with layered aromas of ripe yellow plum, golden apple, almond and fresh hay, supported by notes of wild herbs, chamomile, flint and a gentle saline breeze that clearly speaks of Collio. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied yet wonderfully digestible, with a supple texture and bright, well-integrated acidity. Flavors of stone fruit, pear skin, citrus zest and bitter almond are interwoven with a distinct mineral backbone derived from the ponka soils. There is a subtle waxy, savory nuance as it opens, along with hints of dried flowers and spice, adding complexity with air. The finish is long, clean and slightly savory, encouraging another sip. This 2016 has developed beautifully and, while already in a prime drinking window, it has the structure and acidity to continue evolving gracefully for several more years under good cellaring conditions.

Production
The grapes for this Friulano Riserva come from the Zegla zone in Collio, an undulating hillside area in Friuli-Venezia Giulia that is renowned for its ponka soils – layered marl and sandstone that naturally limit yields and impart marked minerality and tension to the wines. Vines are typically grown on well-exposed slopes, benefiting from warm days, cool nights and steady ventilation from both the Alps and the nearby Adriatic Sea. Harvest is usually carried out by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are selected. In the cellar, the winemaking emphasizes purity and terroir, with gentle pressing and a controlled fermentation designed to preserve Friulano’s aromatic integrity. The wine is then matured as a Riserva, allowing extended time on fine lees and in tank and/or large neutral vessels so that texture, complexity and the distinctive mineral character of Zegla can fully emerge before bottling.

Food & Serving
This Collio Friulano is a versatile partner at the table and shines with refined yet characterful dishes. It pairs beautifully with raw or simply prepared seafood (tuna tartare, scallop crudo, grilled prawns), local cured meats such as prosciutto di San Daniele, and semi-aged cheeses. It also complements risottos with herbs or spring vegetables, roasted poultry, and delicate white meat dishes, especially those with a light cream or mushroom sauce. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to balance freshness and aromatic expression. A brief decanting or allowing the wine 20–30 minutes in the glass helps it open up and fully reveal its subtler layers of minerality and spice.
