Description
RÉMY BERTIN Champagne Réserve Extra Brut is a finely crafted grower-style Champagne that highlights the natural character of its fruit rather than masking it with heavy dosage. Blending Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir, this cuvée delivers a bone-dry, precise and elegant expression of the Champagne region. Its Extra Brut style makes it a superb choice for those who appreciate purity, tension and gastronomic versatility in their sparkling wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Champagne shows a bright, pale gold color with a fine, persistent bead and lively mousse. On the nose, expect delicate citrus and green apple layered with white flowers, fresh brioche, and subtle notes of almond and chalk.
The palate is crisp and focused, with a taut mineral backbone typical of quality Champagne terroir. Fresh lemon, crunchy pear and orchard fruits are supported by hints of hazelnut, light pastry cream and a touch of saline complexity. The Extra Brut dosage keeps the wine ultra-clean and dry, highlighting its precision and length rather than sweetness. This non-vintage cuvée is ready to drink upon release but will reward a few years of cellaring, gaining additional toastiness, depth and nutty nuance over time.
Production
Sourced from carefully selected parcels in the Champagne region of France, RÉMY BERTIN Champagne Réserve Extra Brut reflects a classic Champagne terroir of chalk and limestone, which lends the wine its drive and minerality. Chardonnay brings tension and finesse, while Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir (Pinot Nero) add body, fruit and structure. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure optimal quality and careful selection in the vineyard. After gentle pressing, the base wines are vinified in stainless steel (and, in some parcels, small oak for added complexity, depending on the house’s style), undergoing a cool fermentation to preserve freshness and aromatics. The cuvée is then assembled and undergoes secondary fermentation in bottle, resting on the lees for an extended period to gain creaminess and biscuit notes before disgorgement with a very low dosage to achieve the Extra Brut profile.
Food & Serving
This Extra Brut Champagne is a versatile, food-friendly wine that shines with refined, delicately flavored dishes. Pair it with oysters, scallops, sushi, sashimi, and other raw or lightly cooked seafood, or serve alongside goat cheese, fresh burrata, and simple canapés. It also works beautifully with poultry dishes, tempura, and light vegetable-based starters. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). Decanting is not necessary, but pouring the wine into a wider-bowled white wine glass rather than a narrow flute will help open up the aromatics and reveal its layered complexity.
Producer
Rémy Bertin is a family-name Champagne grower/producer, representative of the region’s tradition of crafting characterful wines from their own vineyards rather than relying solely on large houses. While smaller in scale than the grand marques, producers like Rémy Bertin play an important role in showcasing the nuances of individual terroirs and distinctive house styles in Champagne. Their focus on careful vineyard management, selective harvesting and thoughtful blending has earned them a loyal following among enthusiasts seeking authentic, terroir-driven Champagnes with personality and excellent value.
