Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a bright garnet color with youthful ruby reflections, a classic sign of Nebbiolo’s energy and finesse. The bouquet is refined and layered, with notes of red cherry, wild berries, rose petals, dried herbs, spice, and a subtle mineral edge. On the palate, expect a wine that is elegant and linear, with vibrant acidity, firm but polished tannins, and a savoury, alpine character that keeps the finish lifted and precise. As a Riserva, it has the concentration and balance to age gracefully, developing more complexity over the next several years.

Production
Sassella is one of the most renowned crus of Valtellina Superiore, shaped by steep terraced vineyards, rocky soils, and a cool mountain climate that gives Nebbiolo—locally known as Chiavennasca—its trademark freshness and aromatic purity. The demanding hillside conditions encourage low yields and concentrated fruit, while careful harvest selection helps preserve quality. Vinification is typically carried out with an emphasis on gentle extraction and controlled fermentation to protect Nebbiolo’s delicate perfume. As a Riserva, the wine is then matured for an extended period to build depth, soften the tannins, and integrate the wine’s mineral backbone and savoury complexity.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent partner for roasted game, braised beef, osso buco, venison, mushroom risotto, and aged cheeses such as Valtellina Casera or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for about 1–2 hours if drinking young, to allow the aromatics and structure to fully open.
