Description

Raina Montefalco Sagrantino Magnum 2008 is a powerful yet refined expression of one of Italy’s most characterful grapes, presented in the ideal format for long, graceful aging. Crafted by boutique producer Raina in the hills of Umbria, this mature Sagrantino marries intensity, structure and complexity in a way that only time in bottle can deliver. Offered in magnum, it’s perfectly suited for the table and for collectors seeking a well‑cellared, ready-to-enjoy treasure from a classic vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2008 Montefalco Sagrantino shows a deep garnet core with brick‑tinged edges, reflecting its age and evolution. The nose opens slowly, revealing layers of dried blackberries and plums, macerated cherries, violets, and potpourri, with savoury notes of leather, tobacco leaf, cocoa, sweet spices and a gentle balsamic hint. On the palate, this is a structured, full‑bodied wine, yet time has softened Sagrantino’s famously firm tannins into something polished and harmonious. Dark fruits – blackberry, black cherry and plum – are intertwined with notes of licorice, espresso, dried herbs and earthy truffle tones. The finish is long, dry and persistent, with a pleasant grip that makes it superb at the table. In magnum, 2008 still has the backbone to evolve further, but it is squarely in its drinking window now, showing mature complexity and tertiary nuances while retaining freshness and definition.

Production
Raina’s Montefalco Sagrantino comes from organically farmed vineyards in the rolling hills around Montefalco, in the heart of Umbria. The terroir here is a mix of clay and limestone with good drainage, giving naturally low yields and grapes with impressive concentration and tannic structure. Harvest is typically carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe Sagrantino clusters are selected. In the cellar, Raina follows a relatively traditional approach: long macerations to fully extract colour, flavour and tannin, followed by extended aging in large oak casks and/or neutral barrels to integrate the wine’s power without masking its character. Bottling in magnum further slows the evolution, preserving freshness and complexity over many years of maturation.

Food & Serving
This mature Sagrantino is a superb partner for rich, flavourful dishes. Think slow‑braised lamb shanks, beef short ribs, wild boar ragù, aged pecorino, grilled steak with rosemary, or game such as venison with mushrooms. It also works beautifully with hearty pasta dishes, truffle‑accented cuisine and rustic Umbrian fare featuring lentils and sausages. Serve at 18 °C (about 64–65 °F); for a 2008 vintage, open the magnum at least one to two hours before serving and, if there is sediment, decant gently. The wine will continue to unfurl in the glass, revealing new layers over the course of the meal.

Producer
Raina is a small, quality‑driven estate based near Montefalco in Umbria, an area increasingly recognized for its distinctive Sagrantino wines. Founded by Francesco Mariani, the winery is known for its organic farming, artisanal scale and focus on expressing the authenticity of local varieties and terroir. Working with low yields and careful, minimally interventionist winemaking, Raina has become a respected name among enthusiasts seeking elegant, terroir‑driven interpretations of Montefalco Sagrantino. The estate’s wines often feature in the conversations around the region’s most thoughtful producers, helping to showcase Umbria as one of Italy’s rising stars for ageworthy red wines.
