Description
Raina Campo di Colonnello Trebbiano Spoletino 2023 is a vibrant, terroir-driven white from the rolling hills of Umbria, crafted by the biodynamic estate Raina. Made exclusively from Trebbiano Spoletino grown on the single vineyard “Campo di Colonnello”, it marries crisp freshness with textural depth and a distinct mineral edge. This cuvée shines as a contemporary interpretation of one of Umbria’s most characterful native white grapes, showing how thoughtfully farmed fruit and gentle cellar work can elevate a traditional variety.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 vintage shows a luminous straw-yellow colour with greenish reflections, hinting at its youth and energy. The nose is pure and expressive, offering aromas of white blossoms, lemon zest and grapefruit, green apple and a subtle herbal note that recalls wild fennel and fresh-cut grass, all underpinned by a delicate chalky minerality.
On the palate, Campo di Colonnello is medium-bodied yet elegant, with a lively, mouth-watering acidity that keeps the wine beautifully focused. Flavours of citrus, green apple and pear are layered with a gentle, almost creamy texture from its time on the lees, leading into a long, saline and distinctly mineral finish. The balance between freshness, fine structure and gentle richness makes this Trebbiano Spoletino both immediately approachable and surprisingly serious. Enjoy it now for its vibrant fruit, or cellar it for 3–5 years to allow the mineral and savoury notes to gain further complexity.
Production
The grapes for Campo di Colonnello 2023 come from the eponymous vineyard lying at around 250–300 metres above sea level in the heart of Umbria, where clay- and limestone-rich soils contribute both weight and tension to the wine. Farmed organically and according to biodynamic principles, the vineyard is harvested by hand in early September to capture optimal ripeness while preserving bright acidity. After a gentle pressing, the must ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, reflecting Raina’s low-intervention philosophy. The wine then ages sur lie for six months in steel, with periodic bâtonnage to build texture and complexity, before being bottled with minimal handling and without unnecessary filtration to preserve its natural character.
Food & Serving
This Trebbiano Spoletino is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with seafood dishes such as grilled prawns, sea bream, oysters or simple crudo and ceviche. It also complements vegetable-based cuisine, from asparagus risotto and lemony pasta with zucchini to fresh goat cheese, burrata, or mild young pecorino. Serve well-chilled at 8–10 °C to highlight its crispness and aromatics; if possible, open the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving, or give it a brief splash in a small carafe, which allows the floral and herbal nuances to fully unfold.
