Description
Radikon Slatnik Bianco 2023 is a characterful skin-contact white from one of Friuli’s most influential natural wine pioneers. Blending Chardonnay with Friulano (Sauvignon Vert), it delivers depth, texture, and energy in a style that sits between white and orange wine. This cuvée showcases Radikon’s signature approach: long skin maceration, minimal intervention, and a pure expression of the Oslavia hills in Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Slatnik 2023 shows a deep straw to light amber hue, typically slightly hazy due to its unfiltered nature. The nose is vibrant and complex, with notes of ripe stone fruit (apricot, peach), citrus peel, wild herbs, chamomile, and a gentle nuttiness reminiscent of almond skin, layered with subtle floral and savoury undertones.
On the palate, this is a textured, dry wine with a firm, gently grippy tannic backbone from extended skin contact. Flavours of yellow plum, blood orange, dried flowers, and crushed orchard fruit are interwoven with saline minerality and a light spice. The finish is long, slightly savoury, and mouthwatering, inviting another sip. While delicious in its youthful, energetic phase, Slatnik 2023 has the structure and natural acidity to evolve beautifully over 5–8 years, gaining more complexity and umami character with time.
Production
Radikon farms in the hills of Oslavia in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, on steep slopes of marl and sandstone (ponca) that lend a distinct mineral drive and tension to the wines. The vineyards are cultivated organically with a strong focus on biodiversity and low yields to ensure concentration and balance. Grapes for Slatnik are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, then fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The must is left to macerate on the skins for an extended period, extracting colour, tannin, and aromatic complexity, before aging in large neutral Slavonian oak casks. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration and with minimal, if any, added sulfur, preserving its raw, honest character.
Food & Serving
Slatnik 2023 is extremely versatile at the table and shines with flavourful, textural dishes. It pairs beautifully with cured meats, mature cheeses, mushroom dishes, roasted poultry, grilled fish, and Mediterranean-inspired vegetable plates such as roasted peppers, eggplant, and chickpeas. It also works well with Asian cuisine featuring ginger, soy, or fermented elements. Serve at 12–14°C—cool but not too cold—to allow the aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended to let the wine open up and soften its initial grip.
Producer
Radikon is a benchmark estate in Oslavia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, widely regarded as one of the founding producers of modern skin-contact white wines. Led by the late Stanko Radikon and now continued by his family, the winery has been at the forefront of organic farming, long skin maceration, and minimal intervention since the 1990s, long before these ideas became mainstream. Their wines have become iconic among natural wine enthusiasts and sommeliers worldwide, helping to redefine what Italian white wine can be and cementing Oslavia’s reputation as a reference point for profound, ageworthy, and terroir-driven skin-contact wines.
