Description
Radikon Merlot 2009 is a cult-classic natural red from one of Friuli’s most influential artisan producers, bottled here in the distinctive 0.5L format. This is Merlot as you rarely see it: wild, profound, and utterly characterful, with long aging and minimal intervention allowing the grape and place to speak clearly. A benchmark for serious, ageworthy natural wine, it bridges the worlds of traditional Friulian craftsmanship and avant-garde winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Radikon Merlot 2009 shows a deep, brick-tinged garnet hue, reflecting its age and extended maturation. The nose is intense and evolving, with layers of dark cherry, dried plum, and blackcurrant wrapped in notes of leather, tobacco leaf, dried herbs, forest floor, and a subtle balsamic edge. Hints of cocoa, licorice, and earthy spice emerge as it opens in the glass.
On the palate, this is structured yet surprisingly vibrant for its age, with firm but resolved tannins and a lively, savory acidity that keeps the wine fresh. Flavors of macerated black fruits, black tea, cedar and dried violets are interwoven with umami tones and a gentle oxidative nuance that adds depth rather than heaviness. The finish is long, dry and complex, with a slightly rustic grip that is very much in Radikon’s style. Well-stored bottles of the 2009 are drinking beautifully now, but the wine still has the backbone to continue evolving over the next several years, developing even more tertiary, earthy and truffle-like aromas.
Production
Radikon’s vineyards lie in Oslavia, in the hills of Friuli-Venezia Giulia near the Slovenian border, on steep slopes of ponca – a mix of marl and sandstone that gives naturally low yields and concentrated fruit. Farmed organically and in a largely biodynamic spirit, the vines are worked by hand, with careful green harvesting and manual picking at full physiological ripeness. In the cellar, the Merlot undergoes an extended maceration on the skins, a signature of Radikon’s style, before long aging in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts, no temperature control, and the wine is bottled without fining or filtration and with little to no added sulfur, resulting in an authentic, unadorned expression of terroir.
Food & Serving
Radikon Merlot 2009 is best matched with hearty, savory dishes that can stand up to its structure and complexity: slow-braised beef or lamb, venison, Osso Buco, rich ragù over fresh pasta, game birds, or aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino. It also works beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, and chargrilled vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) and give the wine plenty of air; decanting for 1–2 hours is strongly recommended, both to let any initial reduction blow off and to allow the layered aromatics to fully unfold.
Producer
Radikon is a pioneering family estate in Oslavia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, renowned for redefining the possibilities of both white and red wines through extended skin contact and low-intervention methods. Founded by the Radikon family and propelled to international fame under the late Stanko Radikon, the winery became one of the key names in the modern natural wine movement, alongside their neighbors Gravner. Working organically and embracing traditional techniques that predate modern industrial winemaking, Radikon has earned a cult following for wines that are deeply textural, long-lived and profoundly expressive of their hillside terroir. Today, the estate continues under the stewardship of the next generation, remaining one of the most respected and sought-after producers in Friuli and beyond.
