Description
Rabasse Charavin Cuvée Laure 2020 is a classic southern Rhône red that captures the warmth, perfume and generosity of its sun‑drenched terroir. Crafted primarily from Grenache with a supporting share of Cinsault, it’s a supple, characterful wine that balances ripe fruit with a savory, Mediterranean edge. Named after Laure, the current generation leading the estate, this cuvée is both a family homage and a modern expression of a historic domaine founded in 1880.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Cuvée Laure 2020 shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with hints of purple at the rim, signalling youthful intensity and concentration. The nose is expressive and inviting, offering layers of ripe red berries and cherries from the Grenache, intertwined with notes of dried herbs, garrigue, warm spices and a subtle floral lift. Gentle touches of licorice and a hint of black pepper add complexity as it opens.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a rounded, velvety texture and fine, well-integrated tannins. Juicy red and dark fruit – think raspberry, strawberry compote and plum – is framed by savory notes of thyme, rosemary and a light mineral undercurrent. The 14.5% alcohol is well balanced by freshness, giving the wine both richness and drinkability. The finish is long and harmonious, with lingering spice and fruit. Enjoyable now for its vibrant, primary character, it has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 4–7 years, gaining more complexity and softness with a bit of bottle age.
Production
Domain Rabasse Charavin’s vineyards are rooted in the classic southern Rhône landscape, with sun-baked slopes, stony soils and a mix of clay and limestone that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The warm, dry climate, tempered by the Mistral wind, helps keep the vines healthy and the grapes clean, while promoting slow, even ripening of Grenache and Cinsault. Harvest is typically carried out with close attention to ripeness, often with a significant proportion picked by hand to ensure only the healthiest bunches reach the cellar. In the winery, the grapes are destemmed or partially destemmed depending on the vintage, then fermented in temperature-controlled vats to preserve fruit purity and the natural identity of the terroir. Traditional Rhône vinification – gentle extraction, regular pump-overs and an aging period in a combination of tanks and neutral vessels – allows Cuvée Laure to showcase supple tannins, vibrant fruit and authentic regional character without excessive oak influence.
Food & Serving
Rabasse Charavin Cuvée Laure 2020 is a versatile food wine that shines alongside rustic, flavorful dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled lamb chops, roast pork, duck, or herb-crusted chicken, as well as Mediterranean fare like ratatouille, baked aubergine, sausages, charcuterie and hard or semi-hard cheeses. Tomato-based pasta, wood-fired pizzas and hearty vegetarian dishes with lentils or mushrooms also work very well with its juicy fruit and savory spice. Serve at around 16–18°C; slightly cooler than room temperature helps keep the freshness and balance. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the aromas to fully open and the tannins to soften for a more seamless, expressive glass.
Producer
Domaine Rabasse Charavin is a family-run estate with roots stretching back to 1880, when François Rabasse acquired a small cabin surrounded by vineyards and olive trees. Over successive generations – from Edmond and Marcel to Jeannine and Abel Charavin – the domaine steadily expanded its holdings and built a reputation for characterful Rhône wines that performed strongly in regional competitions. A major turning point came in the mid-20th century as bottling at the estate increased and the vineyards grew to nearly twenty hectares, later reaching around forty hectares with additional plots in villages such as Violès, Travaillan and Plan de Dieu. Today, the domaine is led by Laure, who joined in 1993 and now oversees both vineyard and cellar operations, supported by the modern winery facilities recently constructed to meet contemporary quality demands. Deeply rooted in its terroir and local community, Domaine Rabasse Charavin is regarded as a reliable, quality-driven producer in the Rhône, known for wines that combine tradition, authenticity and generous, drinkable style.
