Description
Rabasse Charavin Cairanne 2015 in magnum (1.5L) is a classic southern Rhône red that beautifully showcases the sun‑drenched hillsides above the village of Cairanne. Crafted from a traditional blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, and Counoise, it offers depth, warmth, and elegance in a format ideal for sharing or extended aging. The larger bottle size helps the wine evolve more slowly, preserving its freshness and complexity for years to come. This cuvée stands out for its combination of power and finesse, capturing ripe Mediterranean fruit wrapped in fine tannins and spice. Cairanne has long been one of the Rhône’s most characterful villages, and in the hands of Rabasse Charavin—widely regarded as one of the star estates of the area—this wine reflects the historic shift of Cairanne into the same qualitative conversation as appellations like Gigondas and Rasteau.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Rabasse Charavin Cairanne shows a deep, garnet‑red colour with a bright, ruby rim, hinting at both concentration and maturity. Swirled in the glass, it reveals a dense, almost velvety appearance that speaks to its southern Rhône origins.
The nose opens with generous aromas of ripe black cherry, blackberry, and plum, followed by layers of garrigue herbs (thyme, rosemary, and lavender), black pepper, and a touch of licorice. With air, notes of dried flowers, warm stones, and a subtle hint of smoked meat and cocoa emerge, adding complexity and a sense of place.
On the palate, this Cairanne is full‑bodied yet nicely balanced, with juicy black and red fruits framed by supple, fine‑grained tannins. Grenache brings breadth and warmth, Syrah adds spice and structure, while Cinsault and Counoise contribute lift, freshness, and a savoury edge. Flavours of dark cherry, raspberry compote, and blackberry are layered with hints of olive tapenade, dried herbs, and a touch of sweet spice. The finish is long, smooth, and gently warming, with lingering notes of spice and wild berries.
From the excellent 2015 vintage in the southern Rhône, this wine has the structure and fruit concentration to age very well in magnum. While already approachable and harmonious now, the 1.5L format offers a drinking window that can comfortably extend for another 8–10 years, during which it will gain even more secondary notes of leather, dried fig, and forest floor.
Production
The vineyards of Rabasse Charavin lie on the slopes above Cairanne, facing the Plan de Dieu plain with a sweeping view toward Mont Ventoux. Here, old vines sink their roots into a classic southern Rhône mosaic of stony, limestone‑clay soils and galets roulés (rounded river stones), which store the sun’s warmth by day and release it at night. This terroir naturally limits yields and concentrates flavour, while the mistral wind helps keep grapes healthy and disease‑free.
Grapes for this Cairanne are traditionally harvested by hand, allowing careful selection of bunches at optimal ripeness—a key factor in the balance and purity of the wine. In the cellar, Rabasse Charavin follows a largely traditional vinification: the different Rhône varieties are gently crushed and fermented in temperature‑controlled vats, often with a significant portion of whole berries to preserve fruit and freshness. Maceration typically runs a few weeks to extract colour, tannin, and aromatic complexity without harshness. The wine is then aged in a mix of neutral vessels—such as concrete, enamel, or large old foudres—designed to respect the character of the fruit and terroir rather than mask it with heavy new oak.
Food & Serving
This Cairanne is a natural partner for hearty, flavourful cuisine. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb studded with garlic and rosemary, grilled or braised beef, duck confit, and game dishes such as venison or wild boar. It also complements Mediterranean‑inspired dishes: lamb shanks with olives, ratatouille, cassoulet, and herb‑roasted vegetables. Aged cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort, or mature Gouda also work very well.
Serve at 16–18°C (just below standard room temperature) to highlight freshness and aromatic detail rather than alcohol warmth. Given the magnum format and the wine’s structure, decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially if enjoyed on the younger side, to let the bouquet open and the tannins soften.
Producer
Rabasse Charavin is a highly respected family‑run domaine perched in the hills above Cairanne in the southern Rhône. Led by mother‑and‑daughter team Corinne and Laure, the estate has built a reputation for combining traditional viticulture with meticulous attention to detail, producing wines that are both authentic and refined. Their vineyards, spread across Cairanne and neighbouring Rasteau, occupy some of the best‑exposed sites in the region, giving naturally low yields and concentrated, characterful fruit.
Over the years, Rabasse Charavin has been singled out by influential wine writers—Hugh Johnson, among others, has named it one of the leading addresses in both Cairanne and Rasteau. As Rasteau has risen to full cru status and Cairanne has gained increasing recognition, the domaine has played an important role in showcasing just how serious and age‑worthy these appellations can be, often in the same conversation as better‑known names like Gigondas and even Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape.
