Description

Quénard Chignin Bergeron Le Grand Rebossan 2020 is a refined white from the Alpine slopes of Savoie, crafted entirely from the Bergeron grape (the local name for Roussanne). This cuvée showcases how serious, ageworthy and textural Savoie whites can be, combining mountain freshness with depth and complexity. Sourced from the esteemed Grand Rebossan site, it represents one of the benchmark expressions of Chignin‑Bergeron in the region.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Le Grand Rebossan shows a luminous straw‑gold hue with subtle green reflections, deepening to a richer golden tone with a bit of bottle age. The nose is immediately expressive and layered: ripe apricot and white peach mingle with notes of pear, acacia blossom, alpine herbs and honeycomb, supported by hints of almond, hazelnut and a gentle mineral smokiness. On the palate, this is a textured, full‑flavoured Savoie white with an elegant, almost Burgundian sensibility. Ripe stone fruits, baked apple and citrus oil are wrapped in a creamy, glycerol mouthfeel, balanced by vibrant mountain acidity and a precise, stony backbone. Subtle notes of beeswax, roasted nuts and spice emerge with air, giving a long, savoury and saline finish. The 2020 vintage has the concentration and structure to age gracefully for 8–12 years from vintage, gaining more honeyed, nutty and truffled complexity while retaining its core freshness.

Production
Le Grand Rebossan comes from steep, sun‑drenched slopes above the village of Chignin in Savoie, where Bergeron (Roussanne) thrives on limestone‑rich scree and clay‑limestone soils with excellent drainage. The Alpine climate, with marked diurnal shifts and cooling mountain breezes, preserves acidity and aromatic finesse while allowing full phenolic ripeness. Domaine Quénard typically harvests by hand in small crates to protect the delicate berries, sorting rigorously in the vineyard and at the cellar. Fermentation is carried out slowly at controlled temperatures, often in a mix of stainless steel and larger oak vessels to balance purity of fruit with gentle oxygenation and texture. Lees aging, with periodic bâtonnage depending on the vintage, adds depth and creaminess without overwhelming the wine’s natural precision and mineral drive.

Food & Serving
This Chignin Bergeron is a superb partner for refined Alpine and Mediterranean‑inspired cuisine alike. It pairs beautifully with freshwater fish (trout, char, perch), seared scallops, lobster, roasted chicken with herbs, veal in cream sauce, and rich vegetable dishes such as wild mushroom risotto or pumpkin gnocchi with sage. It also complements Savoie cheeses like Beaufort, Abondance and Tomme, as well as aged Comté. Serve at 10–12°C to highlight its aromatics and texture; a gentle decant of 20–30 minutes for the 2020 vintage will help the wine open up and reveal its full layered character.

Producer
Domaine Quénard is one of the reference estates of Savoie, a family‑run domaine that has played a major role in elevating the reputation of the region’s mountain wines. Over generations, the Quénard family has carefully expanded and refined their holdings on the steep slopes of Chignin, focusing on low‑yielding vineyards and meticulous work in both vineyard and cellar. Their commitment to expressing the nuances of local terroir—especially through grapes like Bergeron, Jacquère and Mondeuse—has helped put Savoie on the map for serious wine lovers. Renowned in the region and beyond, Domaine Quénard’s bottlings from top sites such as Le Grand Rebossan are frequently cited among the most distinctive and ageworthy whites of the Alps.
