Description

Pyramid Valley Pinot Noir North Canterbury 2019 is a compelling expression of New Zealand Pinot Noir that leans into earthy, spicy complexity rather than pure fruit sweetness. Sourced from four biodynamically farmed sites across Waipara, it combines finesse with depth and a distinctly terroir-driven character. The result is a powerful, highly polished wine that reflects both Pyramid Valley’s pioneering biodynamic philosophy and North Canterbury’s reputation for world-class Pinot Noir.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, vivid Pinot Noir colour with a sense of concentration and clarity. The nose is layered and expressive, with dark plum, blueberry, strawberry, herbs, black pepper and a subtle touch of vanilla from oak. The palate is intense and finely structured, with dark fruit, spice and earthy undertones taking the lead. Whole-bunch fermentation adds a lifted, herbal edge, while the tannins are detailed and the acidity keeps the wine fresh and composed. The finish is long and persistent, and the wine has the structure to age well over the medium term, though it is already drinking beautifully now.

Production
Fruit for this wine comes from four biodynamically farmed vineyards in North Canterbury’s Waipara region, an area known for its suitability for Pinot Noir thanks to its cool climate and varied soils. Winemaker Huw Kinch included around 30% whole clusters in fermentation, helping to build aromatic lift and a slightly more herbal, complex profile. The wine was matured for 11 months in French oak, with 20% new barrels, followed by 4 months in stainless steel before being bottled without filtration.

Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir is an excellent match for duck, roast chicken, game birds, mushroom dishes or dishes with earthy root vegetables. It also works beautifully with grilled salmon or pork with warming spices. Serve at around 14-16°C, and give it a brief decant if you want to open up the aromatics, especially when drinking it young.

Producer
Pyramid Valley was founded in 2000 by Mike and Claudia Weersing in southern New Zealand, where they built a reputation for biodynamic, site-focused winemaking from the ground up. The winery has become one of the country’s most respected names, known internationally for producing wines of precision, purity and character. Since 2017, the estate has been owned by Steve Smith and Brian Seth, who have continued to expand the project, including the addition of Managa Estate in Central Otago, further strengthening Pyramid Valley’s standing among New Zealand’s top producers.
