Description

Prunotto Piemonte Albarossa Bricco Colma 2013 shines a spotlight on one of Piedmont’s most intriguing, lesser-known grapes: Albarossa. Crafted by the historic Prunotto estate, now part of the Antinori family, this red wine combines local heritage with meticulous modern winemaking. Bricco Colma is a single-vineyard expression, offering a rare chance to experience Albarossa at a serious, ageworthy level.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2013 Bricco Colma shows a deep ruby core with garnet reflections, signaling both concentration and a graceful evolution in bottle. The nose opens with dark cherries, blackberries, and plum compote, layered with violets, sweet spice, licorice, and a touch of tobacco and dried herbs. Subtle notes of cocoa, leather, and earthy minerality emerge with air, reflecting its Piedmontese origins. On the palate, this Albarossa is medium to full-bodied, with polished tannins and a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine lively and food-friendly. Ripe black and red fruits are supported by hints of black pepper, clove, and a savory, almost balsamic nuance on the mid-palate. The finish is long and persistent, with a pleasantly dry grip and echoes of spice and dark cherry. While already beautifully integrated at this age, bottles from a well-stored 2013 vintage can continue to evolve for several more years, gaining additional tertiary complexity.

Production
Bricco Colma is sourced from hillside vineyards in Piedmont, where Albarossa thrives on well-drained, calcareous and clay-rich soils that provide both structure and aromatic lift. The continental climate, with warm days and cool nights, allows for slow, even ripening and good natural acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to maintain fruit integrity and careful selection. In the cellar, a traditional vinification is employed: fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks with gentle maceration to extract color and tannin without harshness. The wine is then aged in oak (often a mix of large casks and/or barriques) to refine texture and build complexity, followed by additional bottle aging before release.

Food & Serving
This Piedmontese red pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, osso buco, lamb shanks, and slow-cooked ragù over fresh pasta. It also complements aged cheeses, mushroom risotto, game birds, and grilled meats, where its structure and acidity can cut through fat and umami. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, especially for younger or recently opened bottles, to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften.

Producer
Prunotto is a historic Piedmont estate founded in the early 20th century and based in Alba, at the heart of Barolo and Barbaresco country. In partnership with the Antinori family—one of Italy’s most respected names in wine—Prunotto has become a benchmark for refined, terroir-driven wines across the region. The estate is known not only for its classic Nebbiolo-based wines but also for championing distinctive local varieties like Albarossa, showcasing the diversity of Piedmont beyond its most famous appellations. Combining deep regional roots with Antinori’s expertise and innovation, Prunotto consistently produces wines that are both authentic and impeccably crafted.
