Description
Prunotto Nizza Costamiole 2022 is a refined single-vineyard Barbera from one of the most prized areas of Piedmont, crafted under the stewardship of the Antinori family. Sourced from the sun‑drenched hillsides of Agliano Terme, this Nizza DOCG red captures Barbera at its most expressive and elegant. A careful élevage in small oak barrels preserves the grape’s hallmark freshness while adding subtle complexity, making this a modern classic for lovers of serious Italian reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Prunotto Nizza Costamiole 2022 shows a deep, vibrant ruby red with purple highlights along the rim, reflecting its youthful energy. The nose opens with ripe red and black cherries, wild berries, and plum, layered with notes of violet, sweet spice, and a delicate hint of vanilla and toasted oak. Underneath, there’s a gentle balsamic and earthy nuance that anchors the fruit.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full‑bodied, with Barbera’s signature bright acidity giving lift and precision to the generous fruit core. Flavors of juicy cherry, blackberry and raspberry are wrapped in fine, well‑integrated tannins, supported by subtle notes of licorice, cocoa and a touch of clove from its time in small oak barrels. The finish is long, fresh and sapid, with a lingering impression of ripe red fruit and spice. While already approachable in its youth, the balance of fruit, acidity and structure suggests a very good aging potential of 6–10 years from the vintage, during which it will gain further complexity and depth.
Production
Costamiole is sourced from vineyards in the Agliano Terme area of Piedmont’s Nizza appellation, a zone widely regarded as one of the finest terroirs for Barbera. The vines enjoy a favorable southern exposure on well‑drained calcareous and clay-limestone soils, which help concentrate flavor while retaining natural acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure only the healthiest, ripest bunches are selected. After gentle crushing and fermentation in temperature‑controlled tanks to preserve aromatic purity, the wine undergoes maceration to extract color, flavor and fine tannins. It is then aged in small oak barrels, where it develops aromatic complexity and texture while carefully maintaining Barbera’s inherent freshness and vibrancy.
Food & Serving
Prunotto Nizza Costamiole 2022 is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with rich pasta dishes such as agnolotti al plin, tagliatelle with ragù, or baked lasagne, as well as roasted or grilled red meats, pork, lamb, and game birds. It also works well with aged hard cheeses and charcuterie. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended in its youth to allow the aromas to fully open and the tannins to soften slightly.
