Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Rio Sordo Riserva is a deep garnet-red with the classic Nebbiolo transparency at the rim, suggesting both concentration and finesse. The nose is initially restrained, but with air it unfurls layers of dark cherry and ripe plum, followed by notes of leather, incense, dried roses, tobacco leaf and a faint hint of tar and spice. It’s more shadowy and serious than the typically open-knit, floral expression one often associates with this vineyard. On the palate, the wine is firm, vertical and tightly coiled, with dark red and black cherry fruit framed by incisive acidity and finely etched but assertive tannins. There is a distinct savory dimension—smoke, cured meat, balsamic herbs and earthy spice—that adds depth and gravitas to the ripe core of fruit. The finish is long, dry and persistent, currently driven more by structure than by opulence. This 2020 clearly needs time: expect a graceful evolution over 10–20 years, with its best drinking window likely opening from the late 2020s onward, when the tannins melt and the more ethereal Nebbiolo aromatics fully emerge.

Rio Sordo is a historic cru in Barbaresco, known for its southwest-facing slopes, calcareous-marl soils and a slightly warmer mesoclimate that typically yields supple, approachable Nebbiolo. In 2020, careful parcel selection and hand-harvesting allowed Produttori del Barbaresco to capture the site’s depth while preserving freshness and precision. After a traditional fermentation with extended maceration on the skins, the wine was aged in large neutral Slavonian oak botti, a hallmark of the estate’s classic style. This slow, oxidative élevage polishes the tannins and builds complexity without masking the purity of the vineyard or the character of Nebbiolo.

Food & Serving
Given its structure and youth, this Barbaresco Riserva shines with richly flavored, protein-based dishes that can stand up to its tannins: braised beef or veal (osso buco, brasato al Barolo), slow-cooked lamb shanks, duck with porcini, or game birds and dishes featuring black truffle or wild mushrooms. Mature hard cheeses—especially aged Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino—also make an excellent match. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting is strongly recommended in its youth: give it at least 2–3 hours before serving now, or a shorter decant once it has some bottle age, to allow the aromatics and texture to relax.
