Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Pora Riserva shows a vibrant garnet core with brick-tinged edges, typical of Nebbiolo even in its youth. Swirling reveals excellent clarity and slow, fine legs that hint at both concentration and elegance. The nose is aromatic and over-flowing with character: crushed roses and violets lead, followed by warm baking spices, leather, pipe tobacco and a touch of cedar box. Subtle notes of red cherry, dried strawberry and a hint of orange peel emerge with air, underpinned by a gentle earthy nuance. On the palate, this is medium-bodied, graceful and immediately charming. The red fruit profile—cherries, raspberries and wild strawberries—is infused with sweet herbal tones, dried flowers and delicate spice. Silky yet persistent tannins frame the wine without overwhelming it, while fresh, lifted acidity keeps everything lively and precise. The finish is long, with lingering notes of rose petal, tobacco and cedar. Although quite accessible now, especially with some aeration, the structure and balance suggest very good aging potential. Expect it to evolve beautifully over 10–15 years from the vintage, with the bouquet gaining complexity—more truffle, leather and forest floor—while the tannins continue to soften.

Production
Pora is one of Barbaresco’s classic crus, located on gentle, southwest-facing slopes just outside the village, where the Tanaro River moderates extremes of temperature. The soils are mainly calcareous clay and marl with good fertility, which tends to yield Barbarescos with generous fruit, supple structure and early charm. Produttori del Barbaresco farms these parcels traditionally, with careful green harvesting and hand-picking to ensure only perfectly ripe Nebbiolo grapes make it into the Riserva. In the cellar, the must undergoes a temperature-controlled fermentation with extended maceration to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged for several years—typically around 30 months—in large neutral oak botti, followed by additional bottle aging, allowing the cru character of Pora and the varietal purity of Nebbiolo to shine without heavy oak influence.

Food & Serving
The 2020 Pora Riserva’s combination of aromatic lift, refined tannins and bright acidity makes it a superb match for classic Piedmontese cuisine and other richly flavored dishes. Think tajarin with ragù, braised veal shank, roasted lamb, game birds, truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom risotto, or aged semi-hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano and mature Taleggio. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo stems to allow the bouquet to fully open. While already approachable, decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help soften the tannins and unlock additional floral and spicy notes; as it matures, a shorter decant mainly to remove any sediment will suffice.
