Description

Pontet Canet 2021 is a poised, thoughtfully crafted Pauillac that captures the elegance and freshness of the 2021 vintage while remaining true to the estate’s distinctive, characterful style. Brimming with wild, exotic aromatics and a refined, savory finish, it’s a wine that stands out even in a region known for its classics. Long celebrated as one of Médoc’s most individual and forward‑thinking estates, Pontet Canet continues to push boundaries with biodynamic farming and a deeply terroir‑driven approach.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Pontet Canet shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, youthful and intense without being opaque. The nose is immediately alluring and complex: wild blackberry and dark plum mingle with notes of clove, Indian spices, rose petals and a touch of orchard fruit, with a subtle hint of cherry pit and crushed stone emerging as it opens in the glass. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with a mouth-filling core of dark fruit that’s balanced by a fresh, lifted line of acidity. The mid-palate shows fine detail: savory spice, a gentle saline edge and refined, chalky tannins that assert themselves gracefully on the long, structured finish. While already expressive in its youth, the architecture and tannin quality suggest very good aging potential; expect this wine to evolve beautifully over 10–20 years, gaining further complexity and textural polish.

Production
Château Pontet Canet is located in Pauillac, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils over limestone and clay provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The estate has become renowned for its biodynamic viticulture, working the vineyards with great care, low chemical intervention and close attention to biodiversity. Harvesting is typically done by hand, with strict selection of bunches in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the healthiest grapes are used. In keeping with the estate’s philosophy, vinification focuses on gentle extraction to preserve purity and energy, with fermentation in a combination of traditional vats and, increasingly, concrete amphorae and carefully chosen oak, allowing the character of the terroir to shine through rather than being dominated by wood.

Food & Serving
This Pauillac pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, duck breast, or slow-braised beef and veal. It also complements earthy preparations like wild mushroom ragout, truffle-inflected dishes and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the exotic aromatics and layered fruit to fully emerge; as it matures, a shorter decant or careful splash into a carafe will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Pontet Canet traces its roots back to the 18th century and holds the status of Fifth Growth in the historic 1855 Classification of Bordeaux, yet today it is widely regarded as punching well above that ranking. Situated in the heart of Pauillac, close to some of the most illustrious names in Bordeaux, the estate has become a benchmark for biodynamic viticulture and a pioneer in more sustainable, terroir-focused winemaking on the Left Bank. Over recent decades, Pontet Canet has gained a reputation for producing some of the most distinctive and consistently high-performing wines in the Médoc, with numerous top scores and critical accolades underscoring its significance in the region and its role in redefining what classified growth Bordeaux can be.
