Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Pontet Canet shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple hue, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is exuberant and expressive, bursting with aromas of raspberry tart, blackcurrant pastille and ripe blackberries, intertwined with rose oil, Chinese five spice, cinnamon stick, cedar shavings, pencil lead, dry earth and a subtle wild garrigue character. On the palate, this is a hedonistic, full-bodied Pauillac with plush, velvety tannins and remarkable freshness. Layers of black and red berry compote—cassis, black cherry, plum and raspberry—are lifted by exotic spice tones, floral nuances and a graphite backbone that anchors the wine in its gravelly origins. The finish is long, vibrant and perfumed, with a ‘firework’ of spice and florals that lingers. While already remarkably approachable for such a structured wine, the 2018 has the depth and tannic frame to evolve beautifully for three decades or more, especially in this 6L Imperial, which ages more slowly and gracefully than standard bottles.

Production
Château Pontet Canet lies in Pauillac on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils over limestone and clay provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and its classic Bordeaux partners. The estate is fully biodynamic, working with low yields, meticulous vineyard care and hand harvesting to capture purity and terroir expression. In 2018, the final blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Vinification focuses on gentle extraction to preserve fruit intensity and fine tannins, followed by an avant-garde élevage: the wine is aged in 55% French oak barrels (with a controlled use of new oak) and 45% in concrete amphorae. This dual approach combines the micro-oxygenation and polish of barrel aging with the purity, energy and textural finesse that amphorae bring, resulting in a wine that is simultaneously luxurious and vibrantly fresh.

This 2018 Pontet Canet Imperial is a natural partner for rich, protein-driven dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, dry-aged ribeye or côte de bœuf, venison with dark berry jus, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, mushroom ragout, and mature hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both the fruit and the aromatics. Given the size and youth of this 6L, generous aeration is recommended: decant at least 2–3 hours before serving in its first decade, and even longer if opened young, using large Bordeaux glasses to allow the wine’s complex bouquet to unfold fully.
