Description

Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux from Domaine Comtes Armand is a benchmark Burgundy for lovers of deep, structured Pinot Noir. The Clos des Epeneaux vineyard is one of Pommard’s most prized sites, long admired for producing wines with impressive depth, concentration, and the ability to age gracefully for decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1990 vintage would be expected to show a mature garnet color with brick-toned edges. Aromas typically unfold with layers of dried cherry, plum, forest floor, truffle, leather, and gentle spice, often gaining savory complexity as the wine opens. On the palate, Pommard usually brings a firmer, more masculine style of Burgundy, with concentrated fruit, earthy depth, and a structured spine of tannin. With age, the wine develops tertiary notes of game, tobacco, mushroom, and undergrowth, while retaining enough freshness to keep the finish lifted and long.

Production
Clos des Epeneaux is a historic Premier Cru monopole in Pommard, a terroir known for limestone and clay soils that give Pinot Noir both power and aromatic complexity. Domaine Comtes Armand is careful and traditional in its approach, typically favoring meticulous vineyard work and gentle vinification to preserve the identity of the site and the balance of the vintage.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted duck, game birds, braised beef, lamb, mushroom dishes, and rich poultry preparations. Serve at around 16-18°C, and consider decanting an older bottle briefly if needed, just enough to let the aromas open without losing delicate nuances.

Producer
Domaine Comtes Armand is one of Burgundy’s respected names, particularly known for its holdings in Pommard and, above all, the Clos des Epeneaux vineyard. The domaine has built a strong reputation for producing age-worthy, terroir-driven wines that reflect both the power and refinement of classic Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir.
