Description
Polvanera Primitivo 14 Gioia del Colle Vigneto Marchesana Bio 2022 is a rich, organically farmed red that shows the more elegant, mineral face of Primitivo from the high plains of Apulia. Crafted from low-yielding vines and given extended skin contact, it delivers impressive depth and volume without ever feeling heavy. This single-vineyard bottling from Marchesana highlights the distinctive iron-rich soils of Gioia del Colle, a historic enclave for refined, ageworthy Primitivo.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Polvanera Primitivo 14 Marchesana 2022 presents a deep, opaque ruby hue with violet reflections at the rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is generous and inviting, opening with ripe damson plums and fresh plum tart, followed by layers of coffee bean, sweet pipe tobacco, liquorice and a whisper of wild thyme. Subtle earthy and ferrous notes underline the fruit, giving the bouquet a complex, savoury dimension.
On the palate, the wine is very soft and polished, with a supple, almost creamy texture that wraps around the tongue. Ripe dark fruit and plum compote are lifted by notes of espresso, cocoa, black liquorice and Mediterranean herbs. The alcohol is well integrated and contributes more to warmth and roundness than to heat, while the powerful but velvety tannins create a sensation of gentle sweetness without actual residual sugar. A distinctive rusty, iron-tinged minerality—born of the red, iron-rich soils of the Marchesana vineyard—drives a long, fresh and clean finish. Enjoy now for its plush fruit and silkiness, or cellar for 5–8 years to gain further complexity and integrate its savoury nuances even more deeply.
Production
The Vigneto Marchesana lies in the Gioia del Colle area of Apulia, where higher altitudes, cooler nights and red, iron-rich soils produce a more structured, mineral expression of Primitivo than the coastal zones. Polvanera farms this site organically (Bio), focusing on low yields—reduced to around 50 hl/ha—to enhance concentration, aromatic intensity and natural balance. The grapes are harvested at optimum ripeness, then undergo a roughly two-week maceration on the skins, extracting colour, tannin and flavour in a controlled, gentle manner. Vinification follows a minimalist philosophy, with careful temperature control and a thoughtful élevage designed to preserve the vibrancy of the fruit while allowing the vineyard’s distinctive earthy-mineral character to shine through.
Food & Serving
This Primitivo is a natural match for hearty, flavourful dishes such as slow-braised lamb shanks, ossobuco, ragù alla pugliese, grilled beef, and herb-crusted pork loin. It also pairs beautifully with aged pecorino, caciocavallo, truffle-infused dishes and richly seasoned vegetable stews with tomato and herbs. Serve at 16–18 °C; slightly cooler than room temperature keeps the alcohol in balance and highlights the wine’s freshness. A short decant of 30–60 minutes helps the aromas open and softens the tannins further, particularly in its youth, though the wine is already very approachable straight from the bottle.
Producer
Polvanera was founded by winemaker Filippo Cassano in the early 2000s with a clear mission: to showcase the finesse and authenticity of Primitivo from the high plateau of Gioia del Colle. Based in the heart of Apulia, the estate works organically and is known for its cool, stone-built cellar—partially carved into rock—which provides naturally stable conditions for fermentation and ageing. Polvanera has become a reference point for the region, helping to redefine Primitivo from a rustic, powerful red into a nuanced, terroir-driven wine with real ageing potential. Through meticulous vineyard work, low yields and a focus on single-vineyard bottlings like Marchesana, the winery has earned critical acclaim both in Italy and abroad for the purity, precision and character of its wines.
