Description

Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2018 is a towering expression of Sangiovese that rewards patience and attention. Layered, refined and slow to reveal itself, this is the kind of Brunello that invites you to return to the glass again and again. Crafted only in top vintages and from the estate’s best parcels, it represents one of Tuscany’s most sought‑after and ageworthy reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Riserva shows a deep yet translucent ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, a hallmark of top traditional Brunello. The nose is immediately complex and evolving: wild Mediterranean herbs, cedar wood and dried rose petals intertwine with notes of raisins, ginger and fresh mint. With air and time, darker nuances unfold – prunes, pipe tobacco, cocoa and a subtle balsamic lift, all carried by a beautifully pure Sangiovese profile. On the palate, this is incredibly fine‑boned yet intense, with a silky, almost weightless texture that belies its aromatic concentration. The tannins are ultra‑polished and velvety, framing flavors of sour cherry, dried fig, black tea, licorice, sweet spice and dark chocolate. A vibrant, mouthwatering acidity keeps everything fresh and precise, giving the wine a long, graceful and savory finish. Still very youthful, this 2018 Riserva will benefit greatly from further cellaring and has the structure to evolve effortlessly for 20–30 years or more in a proper cellar.

Production
Poggio di Sotto’s vineyards lie in the prized south‑eastern zone of Montalcino near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, at relatively high altitudes with steep exposures and constant breezes. The soils are a mix of rocky galestro and limestone, which naturally limit yields and contribute to the wine’s finesse and aromatic clarity. Farming is meticulous and low‑intervention, with manual harvesting in small crates and a severe selection of only the healthiest Sangiovese grapes destined for the Riserva. Fermentation is traditionally conducted with native yeasts in large vats, followed by a long maceration to extract fine tannins rather than sheer power. The wine is then aged slowly in large Slavonian oak botti for extended periods, allowing it to develop complexity and harmony without being marked by new oak, before resting further in bottle prior to release.

Food & Serving
This Brunello Riserva is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow‑braised beef or lamb shanks, venison, wild boar ragù, truffled mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 17–18°C (62–64°F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux stems to allow the bouquet to fully open. Given its youth and concentration, decanting is strongly recommended – at least 2–3 hours for current drinking – or, alternatively, allow it to rest in the cellar for several more years to show its full potential.

Producer
Founded in 1989 by Piero Palmucci, Poggio di Sotto quickly rose to cult status as one of the most traditional and highly respected producers in Montalcino. The estate, now part of the ColleMassari group, is renowned for its high‑altitude vineyards, rigorous grape selection and unwavering commitment to pure, terroir‑driven Sangiovese. Poggio di Sotto’s Brunellos – and especially its rare Riserva bottlings – are benchmarks for elegance, longevity and classicism in the region, consistently earning critical acclaim and securing the winery’s reputation as one of Tuscany’s true reference points.
