Description

Podere il Palazzino Bertinga 2006 is a serious, age‑worthy Tuscan red that shows just how refined Sangiovese Grosso can be outside the strict boundaries of Chianti Classico DOCG. Coming from a top vintage in Tuscany, it combines classic regional character with a more modern sense of depth and polish. Sourced from high‑lying vineyards in the heart of Chianti Classico but bottled as Toscana IGT, it offers the freedom of style and the precision of a great terroir.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Bertinga 2006 is deep ruby with garnet and brick nuances at the rim, clearly showing its graceful evolution in bottle. The nose is intense and layered, opening with ripe dark and sour cherries, blackcurrant and plum, followed by cedar, cigar box, tobacco leaf, leather and sweet baking spices. Hints of balsamic, dried herbs, underbrush and a touch of graphite add a distinctly mineral and savory edge. On the palate, this is a full‑bodied, powerful Sangiovese Grosso with impressive structure and poise. Silky yet firm tannins frame flavors of macerated cherry, blackberry, licorice and dark chocolate, supported by a lively, well‑preserved acidity that keeps the wine fresh despite its richness. Subtle notes of espresso, dried rose, Mediterranean herbs and a whisper of vanilla linger into a long, persistent finish. After nearly two decades, the wine is beautifully harmonized and entering a superb drinking window, yet it still has the concentration and backbone to develop further complexity with additional cellaring over the next 5–8 years, and potentially longer under ideal conditions.

Production
The Bertinga vineyard lies on rolling hills in the Chianti Classico area, rooted in classic galestro (friable marl) and limestone soils that bring both finesse and a distinctly mineral, stony character to the wine. The site’s relatively high elevation and pronounced diurnal range – warm days and cool nights – help Sangiovese Grosso ripen fully while preserving acidity and aromatic vibrancy. Farming is carried out organically and along sustainable principles, with yields kept low and the grapes harvested by hand to ensure meticulous selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. After a careful manual harvest, the berries undergo a long, temperature‑controlled fermentation with extended skin contact to extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity without harshness. The wine is then aged for around 18–24 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux, a mix of new and used, which lends refinement, spice and texture while allowing the character of the grape and terroir to remain at the forefront. Extended bottle aging before release further polishes the tannins and integrates the components into a seamless whole.

Food & Serving
Bertinga 2006 is a natural match for rich, savory Tuscan cuisine and hearty meat dishes. Think bistecca alla Fiorentina, roasted or grilled lamb, braised beef cheeks, ossobuco, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, or game birds with herbs and pancetta. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano, as well as mushroom‑based dishes and truffle‑accented risotto. For best enjoyment, serve at around 18 °C and decant for 2–3 hours before serving to allow the mature aromas to unfold fully and the tannins to soften. Use large, Burgundy‑style or generous Bordeaux stems to let the wine open up and reveal its layered complexity.
