Description
Podere Grattamacco’s Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso Superiore is one of the benchmark wines of Bolgheri, crafted from old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a touch of Sangiovese. Sourced from some of the estate’s finest parcels, it combines the polished structure of a great Bordeaux-inspired blend with the coastal freshness and mineral depth that make Bolgheri unique. As the second-oldest estate in the district, Grattamacco has helped shape the region’s reputation for world-class red wines.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in the glass, this wine shows impressive concentration and clarity. The nose opens with dark berries, cassis, ripe plum, cedar, and dried herbs, layered with graphite, spice, and a subtle saline/mineral edge that reflects its coastal origin.
On the palate, it is refined and structured, with firm yet polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and a core of black fruit wrapped in savory spice and earthy complexity. The finish is long and poised, with excellent balance and the kind of depth that promises graceful development for at least 20–25 years, and often longer in a good cellar.
Production
Grattamacco comes from exceptional vineyard sites in Bolgheri, where old vines benefit from a mineral-rich terroir and the moderating influence of sea breezes from the Tuscan coast. The long, sunny growing season allows Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to reach full phenolic ripeness while preserving freshness and aromatic precision. After harvest, the wine is vinified traditionally and matured for around 18 months in French barriques to build structure, complexity, and texture.
Food & Serving
This is a superb match for roasted or pink-seared beef, especially served with a rich red wine sauce and pommes Anna, as well as game, lamb, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16°C, ideally in large Bordeaux-style glasses. If opening young, decant generously to allow the wine to unfold fully and show its full aromatic range.
Producer
Podere Grattamacco is the second-oldest estate in Bolgheri and a key name in the rise of the region as one of Tuscany’s most exciting wine areas. The estate was built on vineyards acquired decades ago, giving it access to some of Bolgheri’s most prized old vines and best sites. Today, Grattamacco is widely respected for producing elegant, mineral-driven wines with serious aging potential and a clear sense of place.
