Description

Pira Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi 2020 is a refined, single-vineyard Barolo from one of the most historic crus in Piemonte. Crafted by trailblazing producer Chiara Boschis, this wine marries Cannubi’s legendary finesse with the depth and structure of top-tier Nebbiolo. The 2020 vintage offers a beautifully poised expression of fruit, florals and minerality that is already captivating, yet clearly built for the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red reflections toward the rim, classic for young Barolo from great terroir. The nose is detailed and perfumed: crushed roses, violets and dried herbs unfold over layers of red cherry, raspberry and pomegranate, with underlying notes of licorice, sweet spice, sandalwood and a faint touch of tobacco and truffle. On the palate, Cannubi’s hallmark elegance is front and center. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with precise red fruit, fine-grained tannins and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity that keeps everything lifted and long. Flavors of sour cherry, wild strawberry and blood orange are interwoven with savory hints of tea leaf, balsamic, anise and subtle oak spices from barrel aging. The finish is long, linear and saline, suggesting excellent aging potential. While approachable with ample aeration in its youth, this 2020 Barolo is best enjoyed from 2026 onward and can comfortably evolve for 15–20 years or more under proper cellaring conditions.

Production
Cannubi is one of Barolo’s most prized hillsides, a south to southeast-facing amphitheater just outside the village of Barolo, with a unique mix of sand, clay and limestone that yields wines of remarkable perfume and finesse. Chiara Boschis farms these vineyards organically, with low yields and meticulous work in the rows to ensure perfect grape ripeness and purity of fruit. Harvest is carried out by hand, bunch by bunch, to select only the healthiest Nebbiolo berries. In the cellar, fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with an extended maceration on the skins to gently extract color, aroma and tannin. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques—often with a portion of new wood—for around two years, followed by additional time in bottle to harmonize structure and aromatics before release.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural match for richly flavored, savory dishes. Think braised beef or veal, slow-cooked lamb shanks, game birds, and classic Piemontese specialties such as brasato al Barolo, tajarin with truffle, or mushroom risotto. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, mature Castelmagno or other firm, nutty cow’s milk cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) and allow the wine plenty of air: decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and unlock its aromatic complexity; older bottles will require a gentler, shorter decanting just to remove sediment.

Producer
Pira E. & Figli – Chiara Boschis is one of the benchmark estates in Barolo, known for uniting meticulous vineyard work with a precise, contemporary touch in the cellar. Chiara Boschis, among the first women to lead a major Barolo estate, took over her family’s historic holdings in the late 1980s and quickly established herself as a leading voice in the region’s quality revolution. Based in Barolo and deeply rooted in top crus such as Cannubi, she has been a pioneer of organic viticulture and a champion of sustainable practices long before they became widespread. Her wines are consistently praised for their balance of power and elegance, and for expressing the character of each vineyard with clarity and nuance.
