Description
Pingus 2021 is one of Spain’s most celebrated wines, crafted by Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck and widely regarded as the flagship expression of Ribera del Duero. Made from 100% Tempranillo sourced from exceptionally old vines, it combines remarkable concentration with finesse, and has earned a near-mythic reputation among collectors and critics worldwide.
Tasting Notes
Pingus typically shows a deep, dense ruby color with excellent concentration in the glass. The nose is layered and expansive, with dark cherries, blackberry, plum, floral nuances, spice, graphite, and finely integrated oak notes. On the palate it is powerful yet precise, with impressive depth, refined tannins, vibrant freshness, and a long, lingering finish that balances intensity with elegance.
This is a wine built for aging. While it can be remarkably expressive early on, Pingus 2021 should develop beautifully over many years, gaining complexity, silkiness, and secondary aromas of leather, tobacco, earth, and dried fruit.
Production
Pingus comes from very old Tempranillo vines in Ribera del Duero, on the Spanish plateau near the Duero River, where the combination of altitude, warm days, cool nights, and poor soils helps produce grapes of exceptional character. Yields are extremely low, and the fruit is handled with meticulous manual work and minimal intervention to preserve purity and site expression. Vinification is carried out with great precision, followed by élevage in carefully selected oak, allowing the wine to gain structure and complexity without losing its sense of place.
Food & Serving
Serve Pingus at around 16–18°C and consider decanting it for at least an hour, especially in its youth, to allow the wine to open fully. It pairs beautifully with premium dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, braised short ribs, or mature hard cheeses. Rich mushroom-based dishes can also be an excellent match.
Producer
Dominio de Pingus was founded by Peter Sisseck, who arrived in Spain from Denmark and quickly became one of the most influential names in modern Spanish wine. Since the first vintage in 1995, he has helped put Ribera del Duero at the center of the fine wine world, with Pingus becoming an iconic label admired for its quality, rarity, and consistency. The estate’s wines have received extraordinary critical acclaim over the years and remain benchmarks for Spanish Tempranillo.
