Description
Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2015 is a poised and deeply refined Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most beloved Second Growth estates. Blending 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, it captures the generosity of the 2015 vintage with incredible finesse and purity. Classified as a Deuxième Cru in 1855, “Pichon Comtesse” is renowned for producing some of the Médoc’s most seductive and ageworthy wines, and this vintage is a benchmark example.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande shows a medium to deep garnet-purple hue, still vibrant and youthful. The nose is elegant yet expressive, offering crushed redcurrants, black raspberries and cassis layered with notes of lavender, rosehip, tilled earth, wild mushrooms and fine charcuterie, all framed by a subtle, polished oak spice.
On the palate, this is medium-bodied and beautifully proportioned, with a remarkable sense of clarity and precision. The fruit is pure and vivid, supported by a firm but ultra-fine weave of tannins and a bright line of freshness that keeps everything lifted. Flavours of red and black berries mingle with graphite, tobacco leaf and a lingering, savoury-mineral note on the finish. Already charming, it has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years from vintage, gaining further complexity and silkier texture with time.
Production
The fruit for Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2015 comes from prime Pauillac terroir, with deep gravel and stones over sand and clay, just inland from the Gironde estuary—conditions that are ideal for ripening Cabernet Sauvignon while preserving freshness and aromatic finesse. The vineyards are meticulously managed, with careful canopy work and selective picking to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are harvested, typically by hand in small crates to protect the berries. The blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot is vinified parcel by parcel, allowing each plot to express its character before blending. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by 18 months of maturation in French oak barrels, around 60% of which are new, adding subtle structure and complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This 2015 Pauillac is a natural partner for classic, savoury dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, venison, duck breast, or richly sauced dishes like beef Wellington or braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with truffled poultry, wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. If drinking now, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to open fully; with additional bottle age, a shorter decant of around 30–60 minutes will be sufficient to remove sediment and release its aromatics.
Producer
Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of the most illustrious estates in Pauillac, classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Historically part of the larger Pichon estate, it was separated in the 19th century and came under the stewardship of the Comtesse de Lalande, whose name it still proudly bears. Over the decades, Pichon Comtesse has built a reputation for crafting wines that combine Pauillac’s classic power and structure with an almost Margaux-like elegance and charm. Now owned by the Rouzaud family of Champagne Louis Roederer, the château has seen significant investment in the vineyard and cellar, further elevating quality. Its wines are consistently among the most sought-after in Bordeaux, widely regarded as benchmarks for the appellation and frequently lauded by critics for their ageing potential and distinctive, seductive style.
