Description
Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino 2020 in magnum format is a refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Tuscany’s most respected names, Antinori. This larger bottle format offers slower, more graceful aging, making it an excellent choice for the cellar or for sharing on special occasions. Combining classical Brunello structure with the polished elegance Antinori is known for, it captures the essence of Montalcino in a generous, collectible size.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Brunello shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with garnet reflections beginning to form, especially at the rim. The nose is layered and precise: ripe red cherries and wild berries mingle with notes of dried rose, balsamic herbs, sweet spice, cedar and a subtle hint of tobacco and underbrush, revealing more complexity as it opens in the glass.
On the palate, Pian delle Vigne Brunello 2020 is poised and structured, with fine-grained tannins wrapped around a core of juicy red and black cherry, plum and hints of blood orange. Savory notes of leather, dried thyme, licorice and a touch of cacao add depth, supported by bright, mouthwatering acidity that keeps the wine fresh and long on the finish. In magnum, the 2020 has excellent aging potential: while already approachable with proper aeration, it should evolve beautifully over 15–20 years, gaining tertiary nuances of truffle, forest floor and dried fruit.
Production
Pian delle Vigne lies just a few kilometers southwest of Montalcino, on gently rolling hills with southern exposure and a mix of clay, limestone and stony soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor in the Sangiovese grapes. The vineyards benefit from warm days and cooler nights, helping preserve aromatic intensity and acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by a long maceration to extract color, aroma and fine tannins. The wine is then aged in large-format oak casks (traditionally large barrels rather than small barriques) for an extended period, respecting Brunello regulations and allowing the Sangiovese to develop complexity without being dominated by wood, before further refinement in bottle—particularly important for the magnum format.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, braised beef, lamb shanks, ossobuco, game birds and aged Tuscan pecorino. It also works beautifully with truffle pasta, mushroom risotto and roasted root vegetables. Serve at 18 °C (around 64 °F); for optimal expression, especially in its youth, decant the magnum 1.5–2 hours before serving to let the aromatics fully unfurl and the tannins soften. As the wine matures, a shorter decant of 45–60 minutes will generally be sufficient.
Producer
Pian delle Vigne is the Antinori family’s estate in Montalcino, named after the characteristic railway station that stands on the property. The Antinori family has been producing wine in Tuscany for more than six centuries and is one of Italy’s most influential wine dynasties, credited with helping raise the global profile of Italian fine wine. With Pian delle Vigne, Antinori set out to craft Brunello that is both faithful to Montalcino’s traditions and marked by the family’s hallmark precision and elegance. The estate has become a reference for a more polished yet authentic style of Brunello, consistently earning strong critical acclaim and reinforcing Montalcino’s status as one of the world’s great terroirs for Sangiovese.
