Description
Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild is the second wine of one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates, offering much of the refinement and pedigree of Château Mouton Rothschild in a more approachable form. The 2020 vintage from Pauillac combines classic Médoc structure with exceptional depth and elegance, making it a compelling choice for collectors and Bordeaux lovers alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2020 Pauillac typically shows a deep ruby-purple colour with impressive concentration. The nose is layered and precise, with blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf, and subtle floral notes, all framed by finely judged oak.
On the palate, Cabernet Sauvignon leads with cassis, dark plum, and mineral freshness, supported by Merlot’s plush mid-palate and Cabernet Franc’s lift and aromatic detail. The wine is polished yet firmly structured, with ripe tannins, excellent balance, and a long, savoury finish. Built for cellaring, it should develop beautifully over the next 10–20 years, gaining complexity and silkiness with time.
Production
Petit Mouton comes from Pauillac in Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravelly soils over clay and limestone provide ideal drainage and help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve full ripeness and precision. The fruit is generally harvested by hand and selected with great care, ensuring only the best parcels are used for this cuvée. Vinification follows the meticulous standards of Château Mouton Rothschild, with plot-by-plot fermentation and élevage in French oak barrels to preserve purity, structure, and finesse.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef fillet, duck breast, game, and rich mushroom dishes, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C for the best expression of its aromatics and structure. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended if drinking young, to allow the wine to open and soften.
Producer
Petit Mouton is produced by Château Mouton Rothschild, the legendary First Growth estate in Pauillac owned by the Rothschild family. Introduced as the château’s second wine, it reflects the same rigorous selection and winemaking philosophy as the grand vin, while offering earlier accessibility. The estate is internationally renowned for its excellence, art-labeled bottlings, and enduring influence in the world of fine Bordeaux.
