Pepi Lignana Il Cucchetto Cabernet Sauvignon Maremma Toscana 2021

Il Cucchetto 2021 is a bold, characterful Cabernet Sauvignon from the higher vineyards of Maremma Toscana, where sea-facing slopes and cooling winds help preserve freshness and precision. Named after the ‘place of the cuckoo,’ it combines Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Verdot to deliver a wine of depth, structure, and a distinctly Mediterranean edge.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a brilliant, deep ruby-red color with dark, almost opaque intensity. The nose is powerful and layered, opening with dark forest berries and fleshy, almost sanguine nuances, followed by leather, oak, and dark spices. Further complexity comes through with notes of tobacco, eucalyptus, and a cool, faintly mineral impression that gives the wine real seriousness and lift. On the palate, Il Cucchetto is dense and substantial, with firm but well-integrated tannins and a concentrated core of dark fruit. The wine feels structured and persistent, balancing richness with freshness, and it should continue to develop well over the next several years as the aromas become more harmonized and nuanced.

Production
The grapes come from higher-altitude vineyards in Maremma, planted on deep sandy-clay soils with a high proportion of stones, which help encourage drainage and concentration. The site’s sea-influenced exposure and mild climate are key to maintaining balance in this ripe southern Tuscan style wine. Harvest is carried out by selective hand-picking at the end of September, followed by around ten days of maceration and fermentation before the wine is matured for 18 months in French barriques.

Food & Serving
This Cabernet Sauvignon is a natural match for grilled or roasted red meats, game, slow-cooked beef, and dishes with herbs, mushrooms, or peppery sauces. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for about an hour to allow the aromas and tannins to open fully.
