Description

Pavie Macquin 2020 IMP (6 L) is a powerful yet finely detailed Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé, presented here in an impressive imperial format made for the cellar and the grandest occasions. This is a modern-classic Right Bank Bordeaux that marries depth and intensity with clarity of fruit and a distinctly chalky, terroir-driven structure. The 6-liter bottle format further enhances its aging potential, allowing this already serious wine to evolve even more slowly and gracefully over time. Crafted predominantly from Merlot, supported by Cabernet Franc and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, Pavie Macquin has long been known for producing some of the most structured and long-lived wines of the plateau. The 2020 vintage continues that tradition but with a more refined touch in extraction, reflecting a subtle stylistic evolution. With roots in the late 19th century and a historic role in championing quality viticulture in Saint-Émilion, Pavie Macquin stands today as one of the benchmark estates of the appellation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Pavie Macquin 2020 shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose unwinds gradually, revealing layers of sweet raspberries and ripe cherries interwoven with notes of orange zest, violets, exotic spices, bay leaf and a gentle waft of vinous smoke. As it opens, mineral and floral tones gain definition, giving a lifted, elegant counterpoint to the wine’s sheer density of fruit. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, layered and firmly built, with a generous, succulent core of red and dark berry fruit wrapped in youthful, chalky tannins. There is both flesh and structure here: the attack is plush and mouthfilling, followed by a spine of fresh acidity and a gripping, limestone-driven finish that speaks clearly of the plateau terroir. The texture is deep and almost mouth-coating, yet never heavy, with a long, precise finish that leaves echoes of spice, floral notes and stone. In a standard bottle, this is a wine that will reward patience; in a 6 L imperial, the aging curve is significantly extended. Expect it to begin showing real complexity after 8–10 years, with optimal drinking likely stretching over two to three decades or more, especially in this large-format bottling.

Production
Château Pavie Macquin sits on the high limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, one of the most prized terroirs in Bordeaux. The vines are rooted in a mix of limestone, clay and chalky soils that naturally limit vigor and produce small, concentrated berries, giving the wine its characteristic tension and mineral grip. The estate is known for its meticulous vineyard work, including careful green harvesting, canopy management and hand-picking at optimal ripeness parcel by parcel. In the cellar, the Thienpont team has, in recent vintages, subtly moderated extraction to favor finesse over sheer power. Fermentations are carried out in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle pump-overs and macerations tailored to each lot, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a significant portion new) to polish tannins and add complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit. The result in 2020 is a deeply concentrated yet increasingly refined expression of this great limestone site.

Food & Serving
This 2020 Pavie Macquin in imperial format is an outstanding partner for rich, savory dishes: think dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, slow-braised lamb shoulder, venison with wild mushrooms, or classic French fare such as duck breast with a red wine reduction. Its aromatic complexity also works beautifully with truffled dishes, roasted game birds, or aged hard cheeses like Comté, Ossau-Iraty or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight both freshness and depth. Given the structure and youth of the 2020, decanting is strongly recommended: for a standard bottle, 2–3 hours; for this 6 L imperial, consider 4–6 hours or more, especially in the next decade, to allow the tannins to soften and the aromatic profile to fully blossom.

Producer
Château Pavie Macquin traces its origins back to the late 19th century, when Albert Macquin—a pioneer in the fight against phylloxera—played a crucial role in replanting Bordeaux’s vineyards with grafted vines. Today, under the guidance of the Thienpont family and winemaker Nicolas Thienpont, the estate is recognized as one of the leading Grand Cru Classé properties in Saint-Émilion. Perched on the appellation’s limestone plateau, Pavie Macquin has earned a reputation for producing intensely structured, ageworthy wines that rank among the most serious and sought-after on the Right Bank. Over the past decade, the château has been widely praised for fine-tuning its style, bringing greater precision, balance and elegance while maintaining the depth and longevity that have long defined its best vintages.
