Description

Pavie Macquin 2020 in Double Magnum (3L) is a powerful, age‑worthy Saint‑Émilion that captures the depth and finesse of this legendary Right Bank terroir. Presented in a large-format bottle ideal for cellaring and special occasions, it delivers a beautifully layered expression of modern Bordeaux. Combining classic structure with a more refined extraction in recent vintages, this wine balances richness, precision and serious aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Pavie Macquin 2020 shows a deep, almost opaque ruby-purple hue, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose opens slowly but confidently with aromas of sweet raspberries and dark cherries, followed by notes of blood orange zest, violets, exotic spices, bay leaf and a gentle touch of smoky, graphite‑like minerality. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, dense and layered, with a generous core of ripe red and black fruit framed by youthful, chalky tannins. There’s a mouthfilling, almost fleshy texture, yet the wine retains freshness and energy, with a long, mineral-driven finish. This is a structured Pavie Macquin, more powerful and firm than many neighbors, and in this 3L format it is built for the long haul. Expect it to evolve gracefully over 15–25+ years, gaining complexity, silkier tannins and more tertiary nuances with time.

Production
Château Pavie Macquin sits on the limestone plateau of Saint‑Émilion, a prized terroir that gives the wine its signature tension and chalky backbone. The vineyard is planted mainly to Merlot, supported by Cabernet Franc and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, rooted in clay-limestone soils that naturally limit vigor and concentrate flavor. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, parcel by parcel, to preserve the nuances of each plot. In the cellar, the team led by the Thienpont family and Nicolas Thienpont employs careful, more restrained extraction than in the past, favoring gentle handling to highlight purity and precision over sheer power. Aging typically takes place in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), where the wine slowly integrates its structure, oak and fruit into a harmonious whole.

Food & Serving
Pavie Macquin 2020 is a superb partner to richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, braised short ribs, duck breast, or game birds like pigeon or venison. It also pairs beautifully with earthy sides and sauces—truffle-infused dishes, wild mushrooms, or root vegetables, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to show both its fruit and freshness. Given its youth and structure, decanting is highly recommended: allow at least 1–2 hours in a decanter now, and even longer as it continues to develop in bottle, especially from this age-worthy Double Magnum format.

Producer
Château Pavie Macquin, a Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint‑Émilion, has long been admired for its distinctive limestone-driven wines that combine depth, power and minerality. Named after Albert Macquin, the agronomist credited with helping save Bordeaux vineyards from phylloxera by pioneering grafted vines, the estate carries a legacy of innovation and precision. Today, under the stewardship of the Thienpont family and winemaker Nicolas Thienpont, Pavie Macquin is considered one of the leading properties on the Right Bank, consistently earning high critical acclaim for its expressive, age-worthy wines that reflect the character of the Saint‑Émilion plateau.
