Description

Paul Jaboulet Aîné La Chapelle Hermitage Blanc 2020 is a rare and characterful expression of one of the Rhône Valley’s most storied white wines, returning to the spotlight after its last bottling in 2014. Sourced exclusively from the revered Maison Blanche lieu-dit and made from 100% Marsanne, this vintage offers a fresher, more chiselled interpretation of Hermitage Blanc. Its elevated acidity and refined profile set it apart from the richer, more opulent styles traditionally associated with the appellation, promising complexity for those willing to give it time in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Chapelle Hermitage Blanc 2020 shows a pale to medium straw hue with subtle golden reflections that hint at concentration without heaviness. The nose is focused and precise, opening with pear, citrus zest and white peach, layered with delicate floral notes, hints of almond, and a faint suggestion of wet stone and fennel. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied Hermitage Blanc with a distinctly taut, mineral-driven frame. Ripe pear, lemon oil and grapefruit are lifted by a subtle berry-like nuance, giving an intriguing, almost crunchy fruit character. The hallmark Marsanne texture is present but more restrained than usual, offering fine, sleek weight rather than opulence. A lively spine of higher-than-usual acidity keeps everything in balance, leading into a long, elegant, saline-tinged finish. While already enjoyable for its freshness and precision, this 2020 is built to evolve; over 8–15 years it should gain depth, honeyed notes, and more nutty, waxy complexity while maintaining its structure.

Production
This La Chapelle Hermitage Blanc 2020 is drawn exclusively from Maison Blanche, one of the prime lieux-dits on the fabled Hermitage hill, where Marsanne vines grow on a mosaic of clay-limestone and loess over granite, providing both tension and breadth to the wine. The grapes are typically harvested by hand in small crates to ensure careful selection and minimal oxidation, with picking dates calibrated to preserve acidity and aromatic purity in this warmer Rhône vintage. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and vinified with a focus on finesse—fermentation and élevage are usually carried out in a mix of French oak barrels (often with a modest proportion of new oak) and possibly larger vessels, allowing the wine to gain texture and complexity without overwhelming its naturally fresh, mineral character.

Food & Serving
La Chapelle Hermitage Blanc 2020 is a versatile gastronomic white that shines with refined yet flavorful dishes. Pair it with roasted turbot, halibut or cod, scallops in beurre blanc, poached lobster, or rich shellfish risottos; it also works beautifully alongside roast chicken with morel cream, veal blanquette, or dishes featuring truffle, celeriac and hazelnuts. Mature hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gruyère or Beaufort also make an excellent match. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its freshness, allowing it to warm slightly in the glass as it opens. A short decant of 30–45 minutes for a young bottle can help the aromatics unfurl; older bottles (once cellared) should be handled gently and decanted only briefly, if at all.

Producer
Founded in 1834, Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the historic benchmarks of the Rhône Valley and a name inseparable from the reputation of Hermitage itself. Over nearly two centuries, the estate’s La Chapelle wines—named after the iconic chapel of Saint-Christophe that crowns the hill—have become legendary, with several vintages counted among the greatest Rhône wines ever made. Since the Frey family took over in 2006, significant investment in vineyards and cellar has driven a renewed focus on precision, sustainability and terroir expression. Today, Paul Jaboulet Aîné stands as a leading reference in the northern Rhône, producing some of the region’s most age-worthy and terroir-driven wines, both red and white.
