Description

Paul Jaboulet Aîné La Chapelle Hermitage 2019 in the monumental Nebuchadnezzar (15 L) format is a collector’s centrepiece and one of the Rhône Valley’s most iconic wines. Sourced from the fabled slopes of Hermitage, this is a powerful, structured Syrah that already thrills in the glass yet promises even greater complexity with time. Bottled in a dramatic large format, it offers both exceptional aging potential and an unforgettable experience for grand celebrations.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 La Chapelle Hermitage shows a deep, opaque ruby to almost inky purple core, with a vibrant rim that hints at its youthful energy. The nose is layered and intense, unfurling notes of roasted meats, mocha, crushed stone, ripe plum and blackcurrant, interwoven with hints of black pepper, smoked herbs and subtle oak spice. On the palate, this is full-bodied and concentrated, with a rich, velvety texture wrapped around a substantial but finely sculpted tannic frame. Dense black fruits—cassis, blackberry and dark plum—are joined by graphite, cocoa, cracked pepper and savoury game nuances. The finish is long and complex, marked by crushed black pepper, salted liquorice and mineral undertones that echo the granite soils of Hermitage. In Nebuchadnezzar format, the evolution in bottle is slower and more graceful, suggesting a remarkable aging window of 20–30+ years, during which the wine will gain further aromatic nuance and textural harmony.

Production
La Chapelle is drawn from some of the finest plots on the Hermitage hill, rooted in steep, sun-drenched terraces of decomposed granite, galets roulés and clay-limestone that produce Syrah of great power and precision. Yields are kept low, and the grapes are harvested by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard and again at the winery to ensure only perfect fruit makes it into the final blend. Traditional vinification emphasizes gentle extraction: fermentations take place in temperature-controlled vats, with careful management of pump-overs and maceration to build structure without harshness. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—typically with a judicious proportion of new oak—allowing the terroir’s granite-driven minerality, spice and depth to shine through rather than be overshadowed by wood.

Food & Serving
This monumental Hermitage is at its best with rich, flavourful dishes that can match its intensity and structure: slow-roasted lamb, dry-aged ribeye, venison, braised short ribs, or game birds with truffle and wild mushroom sauces. It also pairs beautifully with hearty stews, cassoulet, and mature hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and spice. Given the size and youth of this Nebuchadnezzar, a long decant—at least 3–4 hours, and up to most of the day for those who enjoy fully expressive aromatics—is highly recommended before serving.

Producer
Founded in 1834, Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the great historic names of the Rhône Valley and a benchmark estate for Hermitage. The legendary La Chapelle cuvée takes its name from the small chapel of Saint-Christophe that overlooks the Hermitage hill and has long been associated with some of the appellation’s most profound and age-worthy wines. Since the Frey family took over in 2006, quality has been driven even higher through meticulous vineyard work and a renewed focus on expressing terroir. Today, La Chapelle remains a reference point for Syrah worldwide, regularly earning top critical acclaim and standing as a symbol of Hermitage’s prestige and longevity.
